I have a single residential fibre connection and a 2degrees-issued FritzBox 7490. No problems so far.

I have another PPPoE w/tagging capable router that I want to play around with in my home lab, but I can't take down the Internet connection due to the Mrs wants to watch Netflix.

I've tried enabling PPPoE Passthrough on the FriztBox but the 2nd router cannot connect.

  1. I'm confident that the router can be used with 2d but can anyone tell me if it still needs the VLAN 10 tag if it's uplink is the FritzBox (not the ONT)?
  2. I read on the Fritz website that some ISPs don't allow a 2nd connection. I want to confirm if 2d actually allows this before I spend more time on the problem.
  3. With the FritzBox using it's default 2degrees connection profile, when I check the Passthrough box and save the config it seems to save successfully. But if I then browse back to that page the box is unticked. Is that just a quirk or is there something I need to do on the FritzBox to get this saved?

Thanks!

I doubt that any ISP would permit multiple connections with the same credentials - that would allow people to use other peoples credentials too easily to steal bandwidth.  I would think that the authentication server (Radius?) would disallow any new connections with the same credentials as one that is already connected.

You can always run a PPPoE server yourself - any Linux should be able to do that.  Then you can play around with both ends of the connection!  If you are without Linux boxes, then you can put an extra Ethernet card in a Windows box and use Linux in a virtual machine with the new Ethernet card attched to the virtual machine.

If you want to experiment more to see if passthrough is working, you can always use the hidden page in the FritzBox that allows you to capture the traffic to a file that Wireshark can read.  To do that, open this page on your FritzBox:

<fritzbox address>/support.lua

and then click on the "Packet traces" option.

Thanks for the tip on the packet trace function, I will try that.

I will be setting up connections to other services, so I need this lab to have proper Internet access not just simulated PPP

Most providers are doing port-based authentication so their radius servers don't even look at the user/pass.

The PPPoE server machine can be set up to route traffic on to the Internet.  I have an Edgerouter ERLite running as a PPPoE server to my FritzBox and then connecting to my main ERLite that does the real Internet connection.  Any Linux can do the same.

I appreciate what you're trying to suggest, but I really want the 2nd router to have it's own PPP connection with 2degrees.

If it were just a matter of routing to the Internet via the existing connection then I would simply be using the routing functions of the devices.

I'm not looking for any workaround, I want to know if 2degrees supports this function or not, and also those other questions regarding the fritzbox.

Thanks

I'm totally confused by what you're trying to do.

No ISP I'm aware of by default would allow simultaneous PPPoE sessions by default for very obvious reasons - you're paying for a single connection, not two. If you want two PPPoE sessions to deliver two totally independant internet connections I'm sure they'll happily take your money if you order a 2nd connection on the 2nd ONT port.

If you need a local PPPoE server for development work there are plenty of ways of doing this using your local network using your existing connection, the simplest being a Linux server or something like a Mikrotik router.

Why are you confused sbiddle? I am merely going by common knowledge that PPPoE pass through is a thing that exists, that the fritzbox configuration screens explicitly explain that this is possible (I can't get a screenshot right now but trust me it is clearly written) and that the fritz website states that some ISPs allow this and others don't.

I'm not trying to invent anything new here.

I don't want to sound ungrateful for people's responses on this forum (very smart and knowledgeable people) but sometimes people really just seem to want to respond for the sake of it, instead of answering the question. You can always ignore my post if you don't know the answer.

Geekzone would die a quick death if this was enforced.

Most RSP's will not allow a second PPP session.

For some time, Vodafone did allow this, recently they have stopped this - Another connection will kill v6 connectivity on the first.

that's where you're going wrong. PPPoE passthrough is not 'common knowledge' as it can mean a few different things depending on the vendor - it's not a standard. you should explain what you're actually trying to do in terms of outcomes, not technology.

why do you *need* the second router to have a PPP session? if you just want each device to have a separate public IP address, there are better ways to do this than multiple PPPoE sessions (which are not supported on any major ISP that I can think of in NZ).
