Hi All,

A few 2degrees customers, including myself have noticed that download performance from the same endpoints is very different when connecting with IPv4 vs IPv6.
File transfers via IPv6 seem to be capped at approx 3Mbps.

The purpose of this thread is to gather information that may help with troubleshooting and prioritisation, e.g.
- how many people are affected?
- do the affected people have anything in common?
- are there performance issues with all or some IPv6 downloads?

I'm creating this thread because the latest update from support (after being escalated) was that the problem could not be reproduced.

It would be great if we could have people respond to the following questions. Please refer to the list of example downloads at the bottom of this post.
A quick way to test with a Windows machine is to uncheck 'IPv4' or 'IPv6' in the properties of your network adapter which will force use of the other protocol. Network adapters can be accessed via the 'Network and Sharing Center' in Windows 7, 8 & 10.
Otherwise, Start -> Run -> type in explorer.exe ::{7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} and hit enter. Find your active network adapter, right click on it, and choose 'properties'.

I'll start:

Are you affected? Yes - IPv6 downloads from the example URLs do not exceed ~280Kbps. IPv4 downloads all run at multi-megabit speeds.
ISP? 2degrees
Consumer or business connection? Consumer
Internet connectivity medium? Fibre
Where are you based? Wellington
Router model(s) tested? HG659, Custom (pfSense), Direct PPPoE connection to Dell XPS13 9370 (Windows 10)
PPPoE MTU(don't worry if you don't know what this is)? 1492 & 1500 byte MTU (verified)
Operating Systems tested? Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, Ubuntu Server 16.04.4
Do you have an example dual-stack download that performs well with both protocols? no
Are there other example downloads that you can find that don't perform well? We'd be most interested in ones that follow different routes.

If you can think of other questions that might be useful, please share.

Extra:

- It would be interesting to see what happens if anyone is able to host a test IPv6 download on WIX
- Test results from people using other ISPs would be useful to have as well. @hio had the following to say about another GeForce driver download: "pegging lines here, both spark and vf v4+v6"

I have been on their case for weeks about packet loss between my home and work over IPv6. Work is on Vocus and my terminal sessions and RDP sessions will freeze and ICMP doesn't get through probably for about 3 seconds every 40 seconds or so. Can't say I've measured throughput actually but with that kind of packet loss I doubt it exceeds 3mbps.

Are you affected? Yes - specifically packet loss between 2degrees and Vocus (think they peer in Sydney)

i was getting small dropouts for weeks , i didnt notice them until my son started online gaming and he kept getting disconnected . it was just seconds but it kept happening . Rung 2 degrees and explained what was happening and they went in and turned off ipv6 on the fritxbox and i have never had a problem since, so things are not right with ipv6 connections.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

ISP? 2degrees
Consumer or business connection? Consumer.
Internet connectivity medium? Gigabit Fibre.
Where are you based? Wellington.
Router model(s) tested? Edgerouter 4, Mikrotik RB951G-2nHD (I know this can't do Gigabit but was just to test IPv6).
PPPoE MTU(don't worry if you don't know what this is)? 1492 & 1500
Operating Systems tested? Ubuntu 17.10 + ChromeOS + iOS
Do you have an example dual-stack download that performs well with both protocols? No.
Are there other example downloads that you can find that don't perform well? Anything that goes via Megaport.

If you are using a Mac or Linux and don't mind the command line then you can use these commands

I gave up because it was saying -

Gfycat has been broken for months, I'm a reddit addict, so I often get linked to Gfycat videos (webm etc). I considered switching ISPs because I just assumed that 2degrees just wasn't as fast as it used to be, but I still had full speed on other downloads, so very confused.

It wasn't until I googled Gfycat + 2degrees I saw another user in the same boat talking about ipv6, then it all started coming together. It was such a specific problem.

But I've just come across another issue that was affecting me. Every time I updated my Plex Server on Raspbian, it would continually fail while downloading the readynas dependancy. It would download VERY slow, then fail CRC check.

I've just turned off ipv6 and it's fixed my issue!

What is going on? I've been struggling with this issue for what seems like 6 months now.

I think the affected file was (downloads at full speed now that I've turned off ipv6):

I haven't heard anything from 2degrees since the 31st after I asked for an update.

I received the following response on 14/3:

I've taken a look into the escalation and by the looks of things our engineers weren't able to recreate the issue. It seems it may have resolved naturally. Can we confirm if the issue is still impacting?

I emailed back immediately, saying that the problem still exists for me, and other customers.

I asked for an update on the 21st, and again the 28th before I received their latest response on the 31st. I'll email again shortly - taking the squeaky wheel approach.

My ticket reference is: 180226-000676 if anyone would like to mention it when raising their own ticket. For some reason, when I last asked for an update, I got a reply that included a different reference (180312-000410), as well as the old one.. I wonder if the original ticket was closed?

Support was good initially but once we reached the limits of what the first level support guys could do, comms dropped off. One of the CSRs that I spoke to was willing to try and reproduce the problem but they only had v4 connectivity. It's interesting that their default stance with any v6 issue is to just disable it.

At this stage, I don't know what's happening. I'm willing to help out with troubleshooting etc if necessary but no-one has tried to get in touch. It would be good to get updates without having to ask for them - even just an automated email once a week to say the ticket is still open.

FYI you can use ipv6-test.com to side by side v4/v6 performance tests to a number of intl pops

here is an example I did yesterday to Paris

That's all well and good for general speed test websites, but it's a very specific route issue. Try download some of the links above and report back speeds, see if you're effected.

The links in the first post all come in at pretty much line speed in Windows 10, with Resource Monitor running to confirm that they are indeed using ipv6. I also ran the following in Ubuntu without issue:

Snap used to be based in Christchurch before being bought by 2degrees - are the support staff and techs still based there? I wonder if that's why they couldn't reproduce the problem initially. I'll pass this info on.
