Hey friends.

Have moved from a place with fibre to one with DSL. I bought a BT-RJ11 cable, which fits in the socket of the Fritz modem, but the socket looks like an RJ45.

It's a 7390 modem. Suffice to say the DSL isn't working, but it's not clear whether the cabling of the house is busted (ex-rental, been sitting vacant for a year at least 30 different tradespeople working on it over the last six months), or whether I've been an idiot and got the wrong cable :)

So. Should the BT-RJ11 cable work, or do I need a different one? If I need a different one, what kind? I can't find an RJ45->RJ11 on cablesdirect. The cable I bought on cablesdirect is product code C-BTRJ11-5 (a clever parsing will reveal this is a 5M BT to RJ11 cable :) ).

Thanks :)

(As a side note ... while I hate talking to myself, a huge shout-out to 2degrees support on this one. Helpful on the phone, and hooked me up with 50GB extra temp data on my phone so we can tether, watch Netflix, etc., without interruption. Those guys really understand what Internet is all about and have been amazing. They've booked a tech already to come visit the house in case it's wiring, but I want to delete the "am I being dumb?" problem before the dude arrives).

Not an Idiot, The 7390 has a DSl port that is larger than an RJ11.

An RJ11 plug should work perfectly fine though so possibly a wiring fault?

the fritz takes a rj45 for dsl.

it's built to support over that port, DSL, PSTN (on an another pair) and ISDN.

Do you mean the DSL port should take a male RJ11 plug? I have a BT plug in there at the moment (two wire).

Okay, I don't have an RJ45 end (and I can't find any RJ45 -> RJ11 online). Do you mean the port will support a BT plug in the socket, or do I need some kind of custom RJ45->RJ11 cable?

my favorite solution is RJ45 - RJ45 here is best. That's assuming a DSL jackpoint is installed though...

i also use RJ45 to RJ11 cables for this same purpose to modems that have rj11 ports.

a rj11 cable will squeeze into the fritz totally fine, but contacts can be sketchy. do 2d not send a BT -> rj45 now?

Cables direct may do a custom cable for you if you ask nicely?

The house only has RJ11 sockets installed :(

You can reterminate a RJ11 to RJ11 cable with RJ45 yourself.

More likely that house has BT wall sockets. If not it would mean that you put the BT plug into the RJ45 socket on Fritz. Makes no sense.

Ah yep, sorry for (my) confusion.

The modem has the RJ11 end.

Assuming I don't have the tools or technical know-how to reterminate the cables, where would I get an RJ11-RJ45?

Best option is to have Chorus install master splitter/filter. You'll then have an RJ45 wall socket and can use a cat5/6 patch lead (RJ45-RJ45).

Ok thanks. Chorus are scheduled for a "fault" to visit tomorrow so will talk with them then. I have about a million cat5&6 leads.
