Hi There!

A guy came around offering deals on broadband for adsl2+. He said that Vodafone are offering MINIMUM of 8mbps guaranteed and for $90 he will give me 20gb and unlimited national dialing.. I am wondering if the adsl2+ bandwidth comes from the same international pool as the adsl1 stuff, or if its seperate? The reason I ask this is that right now I am with orcon, and my speeds vary from 25k to 600K+ though in the last 4 weeks I have been unable to get 400+ except on rare occasions, leading me to believe I have a congestion issue in my area, and I don't want to pay an additionl $20-30 a month over what I pay now, and get less or the same as what I am getting now. I know this is considerably better than some people here are getting through orcon, but its a long way from what I had before.

I asked the guy what rights I had if they didn't deliver faster service, and he said the consumer guarantees act, but I am not sure if that would apply in this case?

In terms of support orcon vs ihug/voda given I generally don't use support for anything except ongoing speed issue resolution, has anyone got an opinion on ihug? The support I have had from Orcon seems okish, quite patchy. The last time I used the support there were wait times in excess of 30-40 minutes to get hold of a clueless 1st level person and everything they couldn't solve was emailed to a senior network engineer who occasionally would call you back.

Has anyone here got adsl2? Did they change from adsl1, and did you notice any speed differences?

If you think that the normal bunch (non-LLU) people have shared bandwidth, then this is pretty promising (right now on Ultimate pack, not on Red yet, and using an old ADSL1 router):

About support... you'll wait around 20-30 minutes, and email has gotten worse after the transistion - it took around 4 working days to get a reply.

The word guaranteed is very specific. Make sure you remember it (get it in writing!) if/when you find you aren't getting that speed.

I am on Red Network and happy. I am getting 17-18Mbs. I have caller ID on my home line - I assume its free because I sure as hell didnt ask for it.

I think my speed will go higher once I sort out my wiring.

Rung the helpdesk a few times, and if you ring the dedicated red network phone number wait times are not too bad, or do what I did and ring on the way to work at 6am - i waited about 1 min!!

I am getting all this for $60 till the end of the year. Nice!

"Caller display", as Vodafone calls it, is usually $4.00, not sure if the Red network gives "better value" in the form of caller ID. I hope so, as the packs currently suck (apart from the better housecall plans, like what the OP was offered)

BigAl NZ, how did you get it for only $60?

Does anyone know if smaller blocks of data will come for sale? The whole double your dataplan for $30 giving me 40GB a month is a bit much. I normally want around 25gb-30gb.

Its probably best to state where in New Zealand you are. If someone is stating that they're getting 17mbps - it means very little to a person located in Christchurch, Dunedian or Wellington.

Hi, yup you are correct and it was dumb to have not done it. I am in Mt Roskill, Auckland, connected to the Blockhouse Bay Exchange.

Are they (telecom or what have you) going to upgrade the exchanges in other areas? right now I'm down here connecting at 3400kbps to the exchange.

I think there is a ontop charge for the caller ID services...

Only orcon offer caller ID as part of the whole phone and broadband package

I asked the guy more questions, and like you'd expect he doesn't understand much technically behind the scenes. I asked him about the pool of bandwidth and whether its shared, and he said no its not, adsl1 is from telecoms legacy network, and adsl2+ is from each vendors pool of bandwidth, but I think that would only apply to local traffic, all international sites would come from the same gateways no? Meaning its unlikely you would get greater speeds if international traffic is congested at the moment?

He said that they had only been assigned a list of homes which Vodafone could guarantee 8Mb and that he had homes to visit quite some distance from our place, in the opposite direction from the exchange and thought based on this I should be able to get quite reasonable speeds.

I guess I could bite the bullet, though I am going to ask him if he can reduce the cancellation fee from 199 (wtf!?) to $99.
