We've got a few domains/sites and email with hostpapa.com and yesterday and today on a 2Degrees connection (and Orcon connection too actually, but I can't actively test on that connection) we have had very patchy email connectivity (server not found errors in email client etc) and not always able to load the sites, this morning we've got nothing - can't load the sites and can't receive email.

The odd thing is on a Spark connection, it works perfectly.

I've done trace routes to www.hostpapa.com on both connections, results are below. Seems like the 2D traffic isn't getting out of the country at all - anyone else happen to have seen any issues, or has any ideas?

2Degrees:

That is normal for the site - the site is hosted via Cloudflare (a CDN - More) and 2degrees peers directly to them in Auckland where Spark, who don't believe in peering, talk to them in Sydney (makes sense?)...

I can't see any "routing issues" as you describe it - it is working as intended. Got an example of a site you're having problems with? If it was with Cloudflare then you wouldn't be posting on Geekzone (as, Geekzone is behind Cloudflare also).

Are you using 2degrees DNS or 3rd party?

Roger that - thank you. Wasn't sure if that was what we should be seeing or not. Makes perfect sense. One of the sites is www.itecnz.co.nz

Currently won't load at all for me on 2D, but fine on Spark.

Edit - I have just re-tested this site right now and it loaded (I did check 5 min ago and couldn't load the page) but email on that domain is still not working on 2D. Switch over to Spark, no issues.

Seems to be pretty much solely an email thing - question - should you normally be able to do a trace route to an email server?

We are using 2D DNS currently but have tried changing that to Google's and it didn't appear to make any difference.

Edit again - do you know if Orcon also peer with Cloudflare?

OK, after a little more checking things....whatever issue causing the web pages not to load seems to have been resolved, or resolved itself.

The email issue is persisting though.

Here is a trace route to one of the mail servers in question on 2D..

Have you contacted the hosting provider to find out what is going on? Maybe they have been under attack.

Hiya,

Suspect it's an issue on their end - This is trace routing to Cloudflare, it’s going via APE (AKL Peering Exchange) and getting to the end point. The other trace in the post that has the time outs, is leaving the 2D network:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1

2 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms 69.7.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.7.69]

3 * * * Request timed out.

4 195 ms 195 ms 195 ms ip4.gtt.net [173.205.37.2]                           ß leaving 2D network over the GTT peering on LAX MX.

5 195 ms 195 ms 202 ms et-0-0-23-0-200.cr3-lax2.ip4.gtt.net [173.205.37.1]

6 251 ms 250 ms 251 ms xe-3-0-0.cr1-tor1.ip4.gtt.net [89.149.184.174]

Just letting you know that the mail host had blocked our IP for some reason - all sorted now. Thanks for the help, especially from Nick.
