Has anyone tested PPPOE passthrough with the FritzBox 7490?

Will expand I need to connect a router to fibre but it does not (yet) support VLAN tagging. I wondered if using PPPOE passthrough would allow this router to connect to the fibre network via the Fritzbox.

I can expand this in private via PM if @2degreescare want to help me test this before going public.

The fritzboxes are weird...

If you don't configure them with creds, they will automatically bridge.

Interesting idea. I can also test with a managed switch.

I've asked Ricky to look at this for you, and provide an update by the end of this week. We've seen this functionality available in the firmware for a while now, last time we tested it, it didn't work as expected. Now that Fritz is a few revisions down the line, we will retest and let you know.

Nick.

Knowing some of the stupid stuff in the Fritzbox's... i think this would be your best option!

While you’re at it Nick, can you get Ricky to check with Fritz as to when they are going to fix the known issue with Port Forwarding when using subnets. While you can provision subnets and they work outbound when you try and provision port forwarding to these subnets it fails. It is a known issue across all Fritz units and they have said it will be fixed in a future OS - that was quite a few OS’s ago. It renders the Fritz u/s when using subnets.

Thanks

So I have a /29 routed to me and use port forwarding for multiple IPs.. is this what you're referring to?

Backup your config, and have a crack with this - https://en.avm.de/fritz-lab/fritz-lab-for-fritzbox-7490-and-7590/overview/

Yep, that's exactly what I have - I have /30 but when I try and forward on the latest OS it fails. Will try that new firmware now and see if it works for me. Thanks!

Hey Nick - updated, thanks. One step further ahead but I still can't get it up and running.

Do you mind if I email you given you have a working sub and see if you can pinpoint where I am going wrong?

Cheers

Chris

PM me your account number and I'll have a look at your setup remotely tomorrow. detail to me your subnet info and what you are trying to achieve. If it's a huge piece of engineering I may choose to decline;-)

Maybe not .. ;-) Just a reminder this is a residential service using a residential modem... no one is running a business on this... right? :-)

Ok, decided to go the switch way and it works so won't use the FritzBox for this. It was a good thought...

Hi Chris,

A bunch of testing today with the team, on the old firmware and the beta firmware. The bug from AVM (Fritz) is still there in all versions. We have discovered a workaround for the subnet issue, please do the following:

Unplug server/machine from fritzbox, reboot fritzbox, log in with a different device (not the server clearly you unplugged)

Under network connections (Home Network/Network/Network Connections) there's a button to clear all unused connections, hit that and plug server back in and add nat rules. Seems to be there's an issue under the hood with applying NAT rules for previously seen/used IP addresses. We have provided a bunch of info and feedback to AVM to assist them with their troubleshooting and code.

Nick.
