This is a little complex, I'll explain as well as possible and hopefully it will make sense...

We've got a phone line (one of several to this premises) through Spark, with a normal local number tied to it, and it also has 2Degrees VDSL on it currently.

We no longer require phone service on this line. 2D support advise us that we can cancel the number/phone service with Spark with no issues to the DSL, which we didn't think really sounded right.

Spark say if we cancel the phone line with them, we lose the DSL connection on that line too (this does make more sense). Apparently the process we need to go through is to port the phone number to 2D, we can then cancel it with Spark, and 2D should then be able to tweak things to make it a standard Naked DSL setup, but without us losing connection at any point.

Does that sound right? Anybody been through this before and knows the correct process? Thanks!

2Degrees are correct. Spark are mistaken.

Just to confirm:

Your landline number is with Spark

Your VDSL is with 2degrees

If so, you can safely port/disconnect your landline number and this will have zero affect on your VDSL circuit.

Spark are probably assuming they run the DSL service too. They choose to live in the past and haven't updated their approach to this and will disconnect DSL circuits when the phone number is ported away. But in your instance, they aren't even "aware" of your VDSL circuit.

Spark's interpretation was once correct but a number of years ago the "primary" service was switched from Voice to Data,

So as mentioned above 2D are right you can kill the POTS service at will and it wont impact the DSL,

As a Spark broadband specialist, I agree with the above. The voice service and DSL connection have separate circuit IDs at the Chorus end - it's been this way since about 2008-2009 when Spark migrated all our customers to Unbundled Bitstream Access. Prior to that, disconnecting the voice service would have also terminated the DSL.

The person at Spark that you spoke to is mistaken. As soon as the phone line is disconnected by Spark, the 2D DSL circuit ID will automatically convert to naked. Nobody from either provider needs to take any action for this to happen.
