Hey team,

I was messing around with my ONT trying to see what I could get out of it. I did a hard reset on it not realising it's managed by enable not 2Degrees. I called 2D and they basically said "uh, I dunno".

I've searched high and low for any hints on what the settings may have been but no luck so far. I'm guessing my next step is to get Enable out for the 26 seconds it takes to punch the config back in and then pay them $150 for the pleasure. Unless some technological hero can give me the run-down on what those settings should be and I can slam them back in.

The ONT is a white Huawei EchoLife hg8420H. Might be worth mentioning it's an ex-SANP! connection?

A GIANT high-5 if someone had the info needed to get me back up and running. Especially if they had a BTC address...

Yeah, the ONT is owned by Enable and very much part of their network and they won't appreciate anyone messing around with it.

Lucky for me I'm back in action. I found someone who was super helpful at 2D and got it sorted. Thanks that guy!

Doing a hard reset didn't clear anything it appears, it was as simple as having the lan cables plugged into the right ports and bingo bango!

Thanks Aaron, If Enable are precious about their ONTs they should slap a sticker on it saying "This device is managed by Enable and not your ISP and is non-user serviceable" If it's a piece of tech stuck to my wall, I'm gonna mess with it. I'm sure I'm not the only one they deal with who has similar thoughts and life goals ;)

Now my question is, why do I need a router after the ONT? Looking at it's settings it seem more than capable of doing my WAN and LAN connections...

Because the ONT functions as a bridge/media converter and not a router.

Really depends on model..

take for example the ones chorus use, there is the ability to have one with built in wifi inside (AFAIK Chorus don't buy that one by default though)

the reason you need a router/something to do the router is it splits the services provider and the lines company responsibility's.

up until x point it is one companies and after that its someone else's. makes the management so much easier.

why do you need to touch or play with it?

And would that stop you? IMHO that would only encourage the people that would never think of touching it to actually touch it..
