My phone works fine in Wellington and Ohakune township. While outside the Tongario Chateau Hotel a R symbol displayed on the top of my phone - my phone has enabled roaming in the settings. 2Degrees was saying it was on 3G with 3 or 4 bars. I could make telephone calls but I could never open up a webpage for the few days I was there. Same thing on the ski field both with Turoa and Whakapapa.

I have been there 5 days last week and 4 days this week. Same issues. Last week Friday 2Degrees data on Turoa worked however.

Do I need to do something on my phone. Appreciate your advice :)

Edit. I am using a Xiaomi Redmi 3 Note Pro (special international edition).

Roaming to Vodafone? Data roaming turned off in the settings?

I went to the settings and turned roaming on. Same thing.

Edit - under settings and networks. Data roaming - always.

3G roaming I suspect capacity issue on 3G packet switch

Really need 4G to get data in areas of high use. This is why 2degrees 3G roaming isnt really good enough.

I notice in general that 2degrees’ coverage map isn’t very accurate and very overstated. According to the map, Turoa has full 4g coverage - not too sure how this is possible when they don’t have their own infrastructure up there.

They could have a COW up the mountain during peak season

I noticed the exact same thing at Whakapapa on Saturday. Often calls wouldn't even go through for me either. I think this is a major problem with 2 degrees, overstating (or completely misrepresenting) their network.

I've had this issue in the Coromandel before as well. 2 Degrees claimed 4G, 3G and 2G at Cooks Beach, however, only Roaming was available, with almost no internet access possible. I've raised this issue on here before, and raised it with 2 Degrees directly. 2 Degrees claimed it was likely a handset issue (event though I tried various handsets and sim cards, on various different trips). I have a new phone now, so will test this again next time I'm there and will raise it with 2 Degrees again if I'm still only getting roaming, and no access to internet.

It's very disappointing as I have otherwise been impressed with 2 Degrees - but it's enough to make me switch if it doesn't improve.

Feel free to let me know the TAC (first 8 digits of the IMEI) and I can confirm the frequencies. Dial *#06# like you would a phone number in the dialler to bring it up.

LG have the device listed on their NZ site so you'd hope it's fully compatible with NZ bands.
