I use an Orcon mobile plan and for the first time I am travelling in Hawaii. Previously I have travelled to Australia with no problems. Under the 'data usage' option 'Mobile data' is enabled. Under the 'Mobile Networks' option 'Data Roaming' is enabled on 'All networks'. I have an 'Outside Aussie' addon running.

There are two issues I have. Issue 1 is that I never have a data connection available - just the signal-strength bar graph with e small r. The second problem is that dialing local numbers whether just the local (7-digit) or full (001808<local number>) is rejected as an invalid number. Txts to and from NZ are working (and therefore it seems likely voice calls will work too) and this is the main reason for buying the addon. Issue 1 is mitigated by WIFI, issue 2 is mitigated by using my wife's phone - but this is a nuisance.

Have you tried "+1808<local number>", rather than "001808<blah>" ?  That could make a difference.

You don't dial US numbers that way.

You should dial +1 808 1234567 or depending on the network you're roaming on 1 808 1234567 may work as well.

What network are you roaming on? Have you tried a different network?

What type of handset do you have? And are you connecting on 3G or 4G?

First thing you do with roaming issues is do a manual network selection to another carrier

Thanks for responding.  I will try the +1 approach next time.  I am roaming on AT&T - the only available network where I am staying (near Kona on the big island).  When I was closer to Hilo I got one other choice (I dont recall the name) that gave the same results.

Handset is a Samsung J1 2016, there is no reported data connection and apps such as Gmail report nmo available network connec tion.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.
