So I'm having an issue with wifi calling on my XS Max, initially I thought it was the AP's I was using while in Auckland or initiating a VPN from the phone etc, but I'm having the same problem at home with my Unifi AP/EdgeRouter setup.

Basically after some time, even though it's still showing "2degrees WiFi Calling" I can't make or receive any calls. If I try dial out it just eventually fails to connect, and if someone tries to call me it fails to connect.

There any options to try help me debug this issue instead of turning it "off and on" because having it randomly stop, and the inability to receive calls is getting pretty annoying now - especially as I'm currently applying for jobs and there's no way to know whether or not its decided to stop working unless I attempt to make a call, or someone emails me saying they can't get through.

@antoniosk had a similar problem but it was related to a router setting...

Thing that gets me is this happened across three different kinds of router/ap's. A vodafone HG<something> and the airbnb, trying to find out what router my brother in law uses, and an EdgeRouter 4/Unifi AC-HD at home

When someone calls they don't even get offered voicemail, it just plays that automated message as if the phone isn't connected to the network.

This seems to happen intermittently, as soon as wifi calling is established on the phone I can make/receive calls fine and the 2degrees WiFi Calling thing remains throughout - even when it stops working.

At the moment I can see the ipsec tunnel is established:

Be interesting to see if the nat translation is still present when it stops working, but I'd have thought when it does stop working the phone would stop displaying 2degrees WiFi Callingin

Never had an issue with Wi-Fi calling even on Hotel Wi-Fi overseas

It will eventually, but not immediately. The handset isn't constantly pinging the gateway every second to ensure it maintains connectivity. It does have a periodic re-registration timer but that's more like half an hour than half a minute. Otherwise it operates under the normally reasonable assumption that if it was able to contact the gateway to bring up the tunnel, then the tunnel will stay up until it drops off the wifi.

Is there anything on 2degrees end they can look at if I log a support call? Can it be related to the fact I ported my 027 number over?

Other than rollover data, wifi calling was the only reason I switched to 2degrees, so I'll probably just move back to Spark.

Zero chance it's related to a ported mobile number you need to check your network setup!

Why not find the issue instead of saying ' I will just move back to Spark '

Why don't you offer solutions instead of saying "it works for me"?

I'm well aware that wifi calling works for many people, in fact it does for me until it doesn't with no visible way of telling other than being emailed or a text saying they can't get hold of me.

And given it happened in three completely different environments the only commonality is the phone and sim card.

Things I have tried so far:
Turning wifi calling off and on

Restarting phone

Reset network settings

Short of completely erasing all content and settings on my phone, which I'm not going to do, I'm interested to hear what other solutions there are.

Again, in all these environments, the phone never had any issues established the ipsec tunnel to enable wifi calling. And for all these environments the only visible indicator you have that wifi calling is "enabled" on the iPhone is it displaying "2degrees WiFi Calling" which remained on, despite failing to make or receive calls

Because its unreliable, so I might as well keep it permanently disabled. Having it enabled has been useful for the patchy 2degrees coverage in our house.

I wouldn't even trust to have it enabled overseas either given my current experience

Wi-Fi calling does work and I have used it around the world zero roaming charges! Beats $5 daily roaming

+1. I used it recently when I was in Australia, and didn't have any issues with it (at least that I know of)

I locked this but think there is more that can be actually discussed so promptly unlocked it again as I am interested to find out if there is in-fact an issue here.

@dfnt Could you please do a network reset of your iPhone (Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset Network Settings) as I think it is perhaps a configuration issue with your phone. I have not had a single issue with WiFi calling on my XS Max, calls come in fine even on the work network (with a really restrictive firewall). Let us know how you get on with this. Furthermore, this is working no problems on my home network (Edgerouter 4) so don't think you've got a configuration issue there.

To others - No, we're not discussing the usefulness of WiFi calling here or getting into a debate over network carriers. Please keep it on topic.
