Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience with a "My Republic" salesman who came door knocking the other day and to see if other have had similar with My Republic.

I live in Hornby Christchurch and had an Indian guy from My Republic knock the other day, after telling me what he could offer I was interested so he asked if he could come in to tell me more, I let him in and he took a seat after I offered, he then asked my wife for a glass of water (fair enough I guess).

Next came the details, I told him I was using fibre x from Vodafone and I got 200 download and 50 upload for $79 (its actually $69 as I forgot about my discount). He then told me I could get 200 download and 20 upload with My Republic for $75 per month and free fibre install to the house. After I told him I would not be interested as the 20 upload is less than half of what I have now he started telling me that 20 upload would be better than my 50 upload and the fibre is better than fibre x cable. After he could see I was not so keen he started saying how the earthquake has damaged the Vodafone fibre x cables and they were now unreliable.

I tried to say the usual "I'll think about it" to get rid of him and then he started asking me "what is there to think about", slightly shocked I said I have to call Vodafone to see if I had a fixed term contract in place, he then took out his phone and said we can call them right now. I said no ill do it in my free time, he then suggested I sign up now anyway and will have five days to cancel if I change my mind (as if I am going to do that when I am not even sure). He finally left.

I then check the My Republic website which stated that their $75 per month plan he was takling about only has 100 upload rather than the 200 he tried to tell me.

Overall My Republic have really given themselves a bad name for me personally, has anyone else had similar with them?

Technically speaking, copper is much more malleable than an optical fibre. The copper is much more robust in an earthquake.

Report the experience to MYR and they have their own process to deal with people who lie/mislead and jeopardize their business (one would hope at least).

I should do this, but the truth is I would not get anything out of it for the time and hassle it takes me do it, and I would just be doing them a favor in doing so as they could correct this salesman's tactics and have him better represent their company, which is not really what I want after my experience with them.

TBH I'd be hard pressed to think of a time when I've heard of door-to-door sales going well for anyone involved.  If I'm ever inclined to let one of these people in the house it's going to be more for the wind-up factor than actual interest in what they have to offer.

Yeah there are many ways to view the situation, I view it in the sense that the sales rep will prey on elderly and uneducated and effectively rip them off. On that basis I'd drop an email. No doubt a MYR employee will see this and ask for more info.

I am guessing that is why there is a cooling off period with this sort of marketing so that potential buyers can do their research afterwards. IMO I would like to see door knocking laws go the way of spam emails and texts.

Totally agree with Coil's post above - it could well help prevent someone that's less sure of themselves being hoodwinked into signing up against their better judgement.

I'd imagine you could have sent in a complaint to MR in the same time as you took to write your original post!

Anyway, another option is to email them either a link to this thread or just copy and paste the original thread text and send them that.

And, to make it even easier, I've found the online form for you - https://myrepublic.net/nz/personal/feedback/ . Or email address info@myrepublic.co.nz

To be fair to the guy, often door to door guys have special deals that are not available to the general public.

I would agree with this 99% of the time, but last year Pulse energy salesman knocked and I've been with them ever since. So far other retailers can't beat their price (from the ones with online calculator), but I'm considering electric kiwi with their one hour free power or flick with their unique pricing model as i'm out of contract now

was on powershop previously. come to think of it, I didn't let the guy in, we signed the contract on the balcony lmao (it was one of those, call in 5 working days to change your mind contracts)

To be fair he may have been correct about the price but did not word it properly. Enable is the LFC in the vast majority of Christchurch and at the moment they are at wholesale level offering the 200Mbps speed for the 100Mbps price. Most retailers have taken up that offer* and are passing the lower price point on to their customers in the Christchurch area. Furthermore I suspect that My Republic's website pricing does not go into that level of detail regarding the price differential in the Christchurch area.

Still not a great customer experience all round (IMO), but it's highly likely that he was quoting you the correct price for a Ch-ch based customer.

*I know that Spark has not yet signed up to Enable's wholesale discount offer, so Spark customers cannot currently take advantage of 200Mbps at the 100Mbps price point.
