Hey all you Geekzoners!

I'm sure @NickMack and @michaelmurfy will likely chime in on this in a while, but while I've got some free time I thought I'd casually drop by and mention that 2degrees is now mirroring my Linux mirrors! If you're using openSuSE or Arch Linux you should immediately see the change occur.

If you rsync from myself for your mirrors, for now you'll be pushed to them whilst I find a new AM3+ board to replace the failing one. We'll be working closely together over the next few weeks and months to add more mirrors, so of course if you want anything mirrored, it doesn't hurt to ask.

For those of you who would like to see what we're mirroring, and (if) you have rsync, all you have to do is run this:

rsync -v rsync://rsync.mirrors.theom.nz

A big thank you goes to Nick for helping getting this organised. I couldn't have done this without you!

Nice, I was using your arch linux mirror till it went offline at some point with NXDOMAIN so switched to mirroring internode and setting up my own mirror for no other reason than I was bored

Also, cert needs sorting out

Edit: I'd also have expected to get 100+ MB/s down on a 2degs 1gbit fibre from the mirror. Is it rate limited?

2018-11-26 16:15:27 (55.3 MB/s) - ‘archlinux-2018.11.01-x86_64.iso’ saved [614465536/614465536]

Yeah, I've had quite a few issues with the old hardware starting to kick the bucket. hopefully getting that fixed sometime this week. I'll also get that cert issue fixed up. Internally we use mirrorbits to send you to the closest mirror, but unfortunately with my file server going offline every now and then, it doesn't make it easy. In any case for now you should have quite a reliable connection to 2degrees, so if you wanted you could always switch back tongue-out

Once I have some new hardware you should see quite the stability improvement. Sorry about the outages. It shouldn't have taken me this long to fix, but then I don't quite have an unlimited budget... yet

Good job guys! Good to see this has happened.

It will be soon. Work has literally just given me an old AM3+ machine, so I'll have the mirrors sorted in the next 45 minutes or so, then I'll pull down Manjaro. Told you it didn't hurt to ask wink

Would mirroring Debian be possible? I'm with Slingshot though so not sure if worthwhile me using this mirror vs the exisiting NZ mirrors for Debian.

Sure would. Give me about an hour and I'll start the sync. It won't be available on the 2DM mirrors until tomorrow but should be quite a bit faster than CityLink 🙂

I do apologise, but I'm having just a little bit of an issue booting with the new board. Shouldn't be too much longer -- The new board doesn't support EFI booting so a few things need to be worked around

This is great news. I've struggled with slow Arch mirrors! Any chance of Arch Linux ARM?

That cert issue seems to be causing sync issues https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/theom.nz/1191/

That it will for a little while. Last night the LVM media failed so I'm now populating the master mirror from the 2degrees one. Currently at about 50% or 499180 files synced so far. Most of the rest is just openSuSE now, so I'll start bringing up the mirrors again shortly

There's also https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz which is hosted in Hamilton and Auckland and peered at the various IX's in those locations :)

Hey guys,

Just a little update. You should now be able to see the mirror director running now. It won't be the fastest, but the good news is it's now back online. I'm starting a sync for the existing mirrors in just a moment, then I'll start importing the new mirrors.

If anyone is able, please do show me which mirror the mirror director chooses. Use any file in the repos, for example: https://arch.mirrors.theom.nz/lastsync?mirrorlist

As an aside, if you would like to become a part of the mirror network, or work for an ISP (and also have resources available), please do get in touch -- my email can be found when you rsync from me, i.e. rsync -v rsync://rsync.mirrors.theom.nz, or simply PM me here.

As always, if you want a mirror added, either comment on a mirror thread like this one, or PM me and I'll import the mirror (as long as there's sufficient disk space. That means no fedora yet!)
