I recently moved into a new house and ordered fiber a couple of weeks ago.  Last week the technician visited the house and mapped out a build plan, and then yesterday the LFC team came and ran all of the wiring under the house.  I'm now being told by Slingshot that service isn't expected until Jan 9!!! Is this normal?  I'm confused as everything I have read suggests that getting the Chorus team to connect the house is the biggest bottleneck, so I don't really understand why we have to wait another 7-8 weeks.

We're without internet at the moment which sucks as I need it for work and Slingshot is telling me the only option is to wait another 5-10 business days (!) for a copper connection.

Hi There.

The connection date is sent through by your local installer so it sounds like our team are giving you advice based on that. If you send through a message with your account info we can follow up with Chorus and see if those dates have changed.

Cheers

So did they install an ONT or just put cabling in?

Also there might be outside plant work that needs to be done. Ive seen this may times where the house is connected but from the street backward through the network isnt.

I understand how disappointing it is not to be able to get what you want but this topic didn't need "massive = very large in size, amount, or number" in the title. I was expecting you to be waiting for more than a year whereas you're only waiting 43 days (6 weeks and 1 day) to 9 January.

If you were prepared to forgo fibre in the short tem then the further wait is only 7-14 days. But why can't you use mobile broadband for essential work in the meantime?

Ok, thanks for the replies I guess it is what it is but still a little frustrating.

@Hammerer, we've just moved back from the US and I guess my expectations are still a little out-of-whack.  Where we lived you could order fiber (from AT&T or Google) and be up-and-running in under a week or if you were willing to go with a traditional 300/100 non-fiber plan you could be good to go the ~same day~, so an 8+ week order-to-connected does feel pretty massive even though I now understand it's common.

We're using Vodafone wireless broadband at the moment and it's ... well ... underwhelming, particularly when it comes to handling large data uploads.

I don't think that you're comparing service levels for the same service. You have just moved into a new house and you're probably waiting on new UFB infrastructure not just a new connection to your house.

If the infrastructure is already installed and working and there are no unusual demarcations (e.g. having to use a powerpole) then the lead times should be comparable.

I'm probably one of the first in the country to have fiber installed

The wait is pretty typical, although I thought Chorus would have had more experience/capacity now.

Yes and no. I think a part of it is that they did the parts that were easy to do, now theyre onto the harder stuff and its taking longer per rollout. As above, I've been waiting 7 years from the initial "its coming to you!" notification, its due in a few months now.

In a way I dunno if I'll bother now, my VDSL sits at 70/30, does everything I want.... so going to 100/20 isnt going to be a huge jump for me.

But Im a geek...... always like "new" things to play with ;)

I dont think it's necessarily "harder" they have even simplified the ROW laws to bypass consent process. Back when I had mine installed I had to ask neighbour for consent even though it had minimal impact.

Having said that the latency improvement from UFB is definitely worth the wait (at least for me).
