Got this email from Orcon tonight...sweet as

'Putting our prices up is something we try really hard to avoid. But sometimes it's beyond our control.

So unfortunately we've been forced to increase our national landline calling rate from 15c to 19c per minute. If you have an unlimited number of national calls as part of your plan don't worry, that's not changing - this rate will only be applied if a call exceeds an hour.

In addition, the Broadband discount you get for having your tolls with us will remain, but will now be $5 instead of $10. This will effectively mean that your broadband plan is $5 more expensive per month.

These changes are going to take effect from the 23rd of August.

There is some good news though. We've managed to keep the capped calling rate exactly the same. So if you don't have unlimited national calling you'll still pay no more than $2.95 for calls of up to an hour in duration to NZ landlines.

If you feel like you have received this email in error it may be because you have changed plans in the last week. If you have not changed plans but still think you may have received this incorrectly please contact us on 0800 13 14 15.

Kind regards

The team at Orcon

Shouldn't broadband prices be dropping?

I would say Orcon costs have gone up to pay for the increased international bandwidth.

It is an $8 swing for most customers.  Has anyone on ADSL2 been informed of this increase?

Not necessarily. When you look at average per customer bandwidth increasing substancially (not uncommon for many users to be using upwards of 20gb per month vs well under 5 2 years ago), increased labour costs and more importantly the huge amount of capital required for the rollout of equipment for faster broadband then it's fair to say that it's unlikely that we will see any significant drop in costs.

Hi guys,

I know that price increases are never the best news, so I expected that people would get a little upset. We avoid making price increases as much as we possibly can (in fact, I can't remember doing another price increase in the last 4 years I have been here).

Unfortunately the various price increases we have been forced to make have had a variety of reasons.

The price increase for Homeline customers ($3) is due to an increase in the wholesale cost of homelines from Telecom. We have held off increasing our homeline price as a result of this for longer than any of our compititors (as far as I know).

The tolls price increases are also due to increases in our costs. if you look at our national rate it is still substantially cheaper than most of our major competitors.

It has already been mentioned that also our costs of international bandwidth have risen substantially over the past few months. This has unfortunately meant that we have had to raise some prices.

We have also managed to avoid any price increases for customers on the Orcon+ LLU network (with the exception of the change in national toll rate that doesn't affect most of those customers because of the free national calling).

I hope this explains things a little, feel free to post up any questions and I will do my best to answer them.

'We have also managed to avoid any price increases for customers on the Orcon LLU network (with the exception of the change in national toll rate that doesn't affect most of those customers because of the free natuinal calling). '

I signed up with Orcon's ADSL2 a few month ago, now orcon has put me back on wholesale, dropped the speed to about half, then told me the monthly fee will go up by about 30%, then told me the voice call rates were going up too (15c to 19 cents a minute is more than 25% increase). So the info quoted is misleading.

Given that the service has been very unreliable (eg 8 hours one day without phone or internet connection, plus many outages and glitches) I don't believe the orcon ADLS2 is ready for use. About the only redeeming feature has been the support by help desk staff - they are generally responsive and helpful.

I think there is a lot of of cheaper options out there actually for national calling and this is pretty high,

Talk Cent Rates per min

NZ landlines$0.10    ( 9 cents per minute cheaper)

http://www.wxc.co.nz/tolls/index.shtml#terms

Standard charges for NZ on non capped

New Zealand - 0.14 0.14  (5 cents per minute cheaper)

http://www.xnet.co.nz/pdfs/rates_destination_anywhere_plus.pdf

there are other offerings out there as well from other provider, so it always pay's to look around for Toll packages.

Sorry don't normally do comparisons in other forums but thought substantially cheaper was not quite right.

Not really comparing apples with apples though when most of our plans include free national calls up to 1 hour though is it?

How about Slingshot then?

15c p/min capped at $2 for 2 hours, or calling packs if you're really game.

Different ways of looking at it though - Xnet don't cap individual rates on their TalkCents plan (the one quoted). But they do on their standard ones.. but then you can't get the Super cap calling pack I believe.

Orcon offers free national calling on some of their plans, but not all. Some rates cap at an individual level, but then again some don't.

Slingshot has an unbeatable price promise on tolls - find a publicly adveristed per minute rate and we'll beat it.

Food for thought...

Slingshots 12 month contract with $25 early disconnection fee is also food for thought.

All of the new Orcon plans (LLU or non-LLU) have no contracts. The only minimum is one month.
