Hi folks, just signed up to have fibre installed and I am assuming that they supply a Fritzbox 7490?
I have a Netgear Nighthawk 7800 which is fibre capable so I guess that will work with their service?? We also have to have our landline cut and switched to VOIP so any recomendations on a handset that would work with the Nighthawk or Fritz. Many thanks.

Nighthawk won't give you VoIP.

Any phone will work with the Fritz! as it has phone ports on the back. You can also pair it direct with most DECT handsets that use the GAP protocol.

So could I turn off the wifi for the Fritz, plug the handset into that and use my Netgear as a wifi access. I am guessing that the Netgear, or any newer router, have faster wifi than the Fritz?

I'm not familiar with the newer fritzes but they have been reported to have much better wifi than the terrible stuff that the older fritzboxes had. When people talk about useless fritzbox wifi its usually the old models that are barely useful on a gig internet connection even when wired so havent been given out for quite some time.

No. The Fritz!Box is incredibly good. There is no need, at all, to replace it.

Sorry to say - it's not, especially not "incredibly". You won't have the more and more demanded VLANs for IoT stuff like robots and voice assistants.

When there is a choice to bring own CPE:

For the exact same value one could get a DrayTek Vigor 2762Vac and a Gigaset C430A GO (VoIP DECT base & phone) as an add-on. It will offer 8 VLANS and 2x 4 SSIDs and it comes with the flexibility of more sophisticated Edgerouter capabilities. It has a bridge mode as well (if needed later on). I recommend (and installed) it to my not so tech savvy friends and there was not a single complain for this "all-in-two" solution. One could even extend it later on with matching APs from DrayTek to span the WiFi seamlessly.

I have no issues chugging 400Mb/s on my Fritz wifi. For my VoIP (not from 2 degrees), the Fritz supports DECT which means I don't need a base unit for phone calls.

Many thanks for your replies folks. I saw the Fritz Fon advertised at PB. Does it not use a base unit? We are doing reno’s in the new year so using that opportunity to run Cat 6 everywhere. Will probably try the Fritz first and see what the through put is and go from there. Regarding the Fritz Fon app would that mean my wife and I could have it on our phones and not need a dedicated phone?

Yes, you can just use the Fritz Fon app, but you have to make sure your mobile does not conserve its battery too much by dropping the WiFi connection, as that causes the app to lose its connection to the FritzBox.  You can tell the FritzBox which phone(s) to ring when an incoming call is detected.  And you can have different VOIP connections for different phones, so you could use the 2Degrees service for your phone and one from another provider (with a different phone number) for your wife's phone, should you want that.  Multiple incoming and outgoing calls work at the same time even if you have only the 2Degrees provided VOIP.  If a phone is already busy on a call, all the other phones designated to ring on an incoming call will still ring and can answer the call.

You normally want one phone directly connected to the FritzBox (via its analogue phone port or DECT GAP).  There are various things that cause the latest FritzBox firmware to do a security pop up message telling you to confirm the action by dialling a number on a connected phone.  That does not work from the Fritz Fon app with my 7390.  Some examples are doing backups and authorising some sorts of access.  So keep your old analogue phone and make sure you can plug it into the FritzBox's analogue port when needed (it is not a BT socket so you may need an adapter if one does not come with your FritzBox).  Should that be a problem, you can disable this sort of confirmation, or you can do it by pressing a button on the FritzBox if you have not hidden it away where you can not get to it.

The Fritz Fon physical phone is a DECT GAP handset and charger unit.  The FritzBox is the base station it connects to, although it should also work with any DECT GAP base station.  So the FritzBox needs to be in a location in your house where it provides good DECT coverage.  Fortunately, DECT signals propogate better than WiFi, so the location is much less critical than for WiFi.

Cheers fe31nz, I think that has given me the info I needed. Didn’t realise you could still use your analogue Dect phones on the Fritz. Will try ours when we are hooked up. Many thanks👍

If your phone line in the house gets cut cleanly you can plug the new Fritz into a phone jack and liven all the phone ports in your house (as long as most of your phone handsets are self-powered).

Ok I think I am confusing the bejeezus out of my self the more I read.
Here is a senario:
We live in a two level older house, brick and plaster walls etc.
We get 2D fibre with I assume a Fritz!Box and have our copper line cut.
Find that wifi speeds are not great downstairs and want to hook up a gruntier router to increase signal.
Can I plug my current analogue phone into the new router (say a D-link Cobra) or am I stuck with the Fritz and run Cat 6 around the house ( we will be doing reno’s so can be part of the budget).

No you can't use your phone with a D-Link Cobra, or any other router infact apart from the Fritz!box.

Expecting a single router or AP to deliver good coverage in a large 2 story house is an unrealistic expectation, regardless of the brand of router or AP you have. You really need to be looking at options for a standalone access point to complement the Fritzbox.

Not really a great suggestion since they aren't in NZ.

in terms of a VDSL modem, It's Highly likely not telepermited.

Same goes for the gigaset.
