I am finishing up at my job soon and I would like to take the number back that I came to the job with. I am with Vodafone through work but I want to change back to 2degrees as my broadband is with them and I would like the $10 discount for having both my cellular and internet with them. How tricky is it? I assume not too bad but I have never done this before so I do not know of any fishhooks that might be involved in this.

Your company will need to release the number to you. Ask them to get vodafone to put it to prepay (vodafone) once this has been done go to 2degrees with your phone. For a transfer of number from prepay to on account with 2degrees they only need the number on the sim card that currently has the phone number.

If they don't put it to prepay first you need the account numbers etc of the company vodafone account (which can get interesting).

Check with your employer. They will currently 'own' your number, and some have a policy of not releasing them to former employees (sometimes depending on the role your in).

It's super easy as long as they're happy to release the number. There will be a form they need to submit with the relevant account info of both parties. They may not be willing if there is an expectation that your role is contactable on that number, regardless of who occupies the role...or if they can't be bothered with the effort of completing the paperwork.

Make sure the follow the steps as outline - get a release, moving the number to prepay. Make sure to initialise the account, place some calls and all is working. Then go to 2degrees and ask to port the number.

This. They may also be unwilling to release the number if you have customer contact, especially if you are moving to a similar role in the same industry. Last time I did this I asked for my number to be ported to prepay about 2 weeks before I actually finished up, so I had time to deal with any issues that might arise while I will still with the company. All went fine in my case, but I've heard of others who were supposed to be switched over the day or day after they left, and instead the number got disconnected or something went wrong, and it was much harder to deal with the people in the company who had to approve the transfers/reactivation etc once they were an 'outsider'. The telco will have not help you at all until your company releases the number.

Phone companies take this stuff very seriously.

I know of someone who transferred their number without the companies permission. It's a long story, ethically the number was probably theirs, legally it definitely wasn't. So they impersonated a director when the company declined to release the number.

One phone call from the company and Vodafone immediately transferred the number back and said, "we take this very seriously, if it goes to court, will you be willing to be a witness?"

Edit: My story is possibly very similar to the OP's situation. Employee supplied a number originally, then transferred it to the company with a verbal agreement that they could have it back upon leaving. No paperwork and an ownership change later...

This is exactly why I have a personal number and a work number. Yay dual sim.
When I leave, work keeps their number and I don't have to keep fielding their calls for months or years.
I also supply my own phone so I don't have the hassle of finding and configuring a new one, and because the supplied ones are crap.

Definitely just had the conversation with your employer.

This would be quite a trivial thing to them, If they use a certain range or allocate that number to that particular role they may want to keep it.

Don't do as above and try to skip the system. Andrew is right, that just causes havoc.

Thought I might bold this part:

This removes any issue for the company having a number range or a previous rep who used that phone with customers etc.

For the telco's its easy, from an employer perspective, its their property even if you bought it with you.

In saying that, I've recently released 3 even with them staying in the field.....its not a big issue as they know the customers anyway,the way i see it, its not worth making an issue from nothing over it

I took my number to my employer when I started. There is NO way I want to take it with me when I leave!
