I bought a refurbished S4 Mini a few years back, and aside from the fact that it won't allow tethering (it was originally an AT&T handset) it's been OK.  However, it stopped working at our bach around a year ago.  The bach (Taupo Bay, Northland) wasn't serviced by any mobile telcos until a few years back when Vodafone put a cell in.  I was able to piggy-back and we ditched the land-line.  Spark acted pretty quickly and provided service for their customers as well, and soon 2degrees had their own service there also.

2degrees support couldn't really help, but said the timing suggested it might be to do with 2G support being phased out.

When I try to select the carrier manually, only Vodafone and Spark show up, and it won't let me connect to Vodafone.

i would lean twords it being ex AT&T and the supported bands being the problem, the phone is looking for say Band 28 900-970 but 2deg cell is  800-840 hence why the phone cant see the tower, (Frequencies are just an example)

at a stretch you could locate New Zealand firmware and load that in, then the phone would start looking for the cell-towers in the right bands.

Never get a handset from the US to use in NZ as very few bands are actually compatible in NZ

Thanks for your comments.  I guess my point is it was working fine connecting to a 2Deg cell and then it stopped and I can't think why.

2degrees turned off 2G must be related to that

Does your handset support 3G / UMTS 900Mhz?

Do other 2degrees end users get coverage in the same location?

Other 2Deg users here have no issues, most all the ones I know are iPhone users, S4 users.  On the basis of a google based on your "3G / UMTS 900Mhz" question, I found lots of traffic about enabling extra bands support so I might look at those.
