“Hold your horses, your Data Clock use is close to triggering our Fair Use Policy. Ease back on your usage to avoid restrictions. See 2dm.co.nz/dataclock”

So I use dataclock’s daily hour, and have used some 4hour data clock bonus time in my ‘stash’ (friend referrals) but only really browse the web, FB/Instagram and occasional YouTube videos.... also I don’t tether AT ALL so no other devices used. I DO sometimes use it for app updates (I’m travelling in my MHome currently) but I’d say I use less than 1Gb/day? At least half my time is while driving with google maps on, but I specifically chose this as I could (and did) download all those area maps offline...

Looking at the linked website it says ‘unlimited data’ with a ‘fair use’ policy.... what might constitute ‘fair use’?

I'm afraid Fair Use Policies are amongst the things I am not at liberty to discuss, sorry. I can only direct you to the Terms & Conditions.

I use my free hour each day streaming Netflix on the bus to work - not had any issues. I'd say your device is doing more than you think if its triggering 2D's system.......

@saltyNZ So where on the website is their ‘fair use’ enumerated?

How can they say ‘unlimited’ use in the time specified and still ‘fair use’?

Is it a daily, weekly or monthly tally?

If streaming Netflix (which maximises your data throughput to give the best pic) isn’t using enough per hour to trigger it, what on earth IS?

I’m happy to try and stay ‘fair’ but since I’m only using my iPhone normally, and not hotspotting, torrenting or anything, how can my use be unfair?

As I said, it isn't something I can discuss, sorry.

Not at liberty to discuss? Do you mean you don't know? How is anyone supposed to stick to a fair use policy if that policy isn't spelt out?!

I would have assumed that the restrictions you get are the 1 megabit thing listed on the page telling you about it? So no problems just going to get slower if you keep it up. If there are other "restrictions" than the slow to a crawl that the page has on it then they really should disclose them too.

If it's done over a month, then someone could get penalized that just buys a lot of data hours, and maybe has a lower average through put of data per hour then someone that buys less - that doesn't sound fair.

It should really be disclosed if it's data per session through put, or total over a month, as if a month then once someone used so much hours, no point in them paying for more, on that sim anyway.

Yay! They have now come clean (public) on the data use policy limits. The app now says “data speeds will slow after 40gb/month to 1mb/s from April 15”

makes running many sims seem like a much safer bet than to keep buying the clock on a single sim then.

To be fair to 2degrees, I've used Data Clock for watching Netflix non-stop on the train from Manukau all the way to New Lynn without any issues. As this is probably within the upper percentile of data traffic for a device on their network, I suspect you are using way more than is reasonable. As a 2degrees customer I am pleased to see them taking active measures to ensure that bad actors don't bruden their network with unreasonable amounts of traffic. Remember that at the end of the day you are sharing a finite amount of spectrum with a lot of other people. In many areas 2degrees network doesn't have nearly as much capacity as their competitors so they have to be very careful in the management of traffic that goes over their network to ensure the QOS is good for everyone.

I have no issue with them having useage limits, but only that they didn’t/wouldn’t say what they were!

Quite happy with the idea that 40Gb/month is the limit, and I now know what to do to make sure I don’t ever reach that limit too.

Also, as I’m ‘on the road’ in my converted bus/Motorhome this year, data clock has become a very useful addition to my monthly data given.

[rant] however.... being reminded of the limit by their app EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!! [/rant]
