On Wednesday my wifi which I use to connect my cell and ipad started playing up. Essentially when I leave the lounge and use either in my room, which I get a full strength signal from, the internet drops and anytime I try to reconnect it gives a incorrect password error. If I stand up and go back to the lounge it reconnects within a couple of moments. Yesterday it started dropping in the lounge and reconnecting moments later.

I've done the obvious checks I can think of, checking my password is right (it is), changing wifi channels. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I've used this service & router for at least 3 years I believe, and I use these devices in my room almost daily without issue. If it was just affecting my ipad I would suspect possibly something off with my ipad but since it's causing issues with both devices I suspect the modem/router provided by Orcon.

Does anyone know if the router's wifi capabilities can deteriorate over time, like do I need a wifi signal booster (even though I get 3 bars outside my lounge) or do I need to request a new modem/router be sent to me ?

Any advice or ideas to further test would be appreciated.

I'd suggest using a WiFi analyzer app to see what other signals may be interfering with you Wifi. Could it be that a neighbour has just installed a fancy new router?

Do you see other networks?

Do you use a default router SSID or have you created your own that's not unique and could be being used by somebody nearby as well either accidentally or intentionally?

I do see other networks (which are 1-2 star signal strength) and have always have been able to, there might be more than last time I looked but don't remember. The SSID is the default one, that nobody else has connected to as it's uniquely password protected & I have checked the connection logs.

The Android one I use is literally called "WiFi Analyzer" but there are a few of them around

Has somebody duplicated your SSID to mess with you? WiFi Anaylser will show this if you see a duplicate SSID from a MAC address that's not your router.

Definitely not seeing a duplicate ssid, also notice the other wifi’s are on a different channel to me 1 and 4, I’m on 5 but about to change to 7).

I also only have a 2.4ghz wifi signal activated because last time I had a 5ghz wifi signal it was super unstable with iPad usage, that was a few years ago tho so not sure if that’s changed? Do people normally have 2.4, 5 or both (if both is an option) ?

What should I be looking for with the wifi analayzer? There’s like three apps with that name in android, tried two so far in cell. Haven’t tried any on iPad yet as there’s none with that specific name. When using the wifi analyzer in my room it shows good signal strength and I’m not noticing any conflicts but it also disconnects relatively quickly after entering the room for no apparent reason.

So turn off the wifi of my modem, go back to my room then see if it still shows up? I'll try that next.

I've enabled 5ghz and that seems to connect, haven't tested it for more than 10 minutes yet but still want to find out why 2.4ghz won't work anymore when it has for literally years.

It's probably a new device that's throwing out interference on the 2.4 GHz band. May or may not be a wifi device - could be something like a video sender or microwave oven.
