Hi all

Is anyone currently using FreePBX or other flavour of asterisk with a 2degrees home phone plus line?

I'm after a hand with settings - I suspect it's my registration string but could be other settings. I've tried the settings from some fairly old threads on geekzone without success.

I can connect directly to the 2degrees home phone plus line via a Cisco SPA112, and via Bria so I'm sure my sip password is correct (although it contains some special characters which may be causing issues - I can't change this as the password changer on the 2degrees site is having issues).
Also, FreePBX is working fine with my other [2talk] trunk.

I get the following error:
Failed to authenticate on REGISTER to '07XXXXXXX@connect2.plus.snap.net.nz'

Current settings:

Register String: 07XXXXXXX@connect2.plus.snap.net.nz:<password>:07XXXXXXX@connect2.plus.snap.net.nz/07XXXXXXX

[Peer]
disallow=all
type=friend
host=connect2.plus.snap.net.nz
fromdomain=connect2.plus.snap.net.nz
username=07XXXXXXX
fromuser=07XXXXXXX
md5secret=<removed>
qualify=yes
context=from-trunk
nat=yes
dtmfmode=rfc2833
allow=ulaw&alaw
canreinvite=no
insecure=invite,port

[User]
md5secret=<removed>
type=user
context=from-trunk

Does anyone have any helpful advice (other than don't use asterisk)?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Are you sure 2degrees require a MD5 hashed SIP password? That's pretty rare.

No, I’m not sure at all that they need a hashed password.

Someone on here had previously used that in their setting. I’ve tried both ways and have the same problem.

I thought it could be a way around my worry with characters like $ ; + = and : in my generated password. Is there a way I’m supposed to escape them instead?

have you tried replacing the connect2.snap.net.nz with the ip of the sip server?

i know thats what i had to do with italk when i had a sip trunk with them as that was the only way that i could get it to register.

C:\Users\admin>tracert connect2.plus.snap.net.nz

Tracing route to wlgacme01.plus.snap.net.nz [123.255.8.34]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms ------------[XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
2 4 ms 3 ms 3 ms ---------------- [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
3 3 ms 5 ms 3 ms --------------- [XX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
4 6 ms 5 ms 6 ms as23655.akl-ix.nz [43.243.21.30]
5 as23655.akl-ix.nz [43.243.21.30] reports: Destination net unreachable.

Trace complete.

Thanks for your pointers. Unfortunately I'm still no further ahead.

I've reverted back to using secret instead of md5secret as suggested by @sbiddle. Also, afaik the register string doesn't allow for a md5secret anyway.

Thanks, I tried but it doesn't help. Also, connect1.plus.snap.net.nz resolves to 123.255.8.34 as well. But if I change to connect1 on Bria the authentication fails there, so I need to stick with connect2.

Also, I started out with the settings in the very helpful link for 2degrees voip settings. They worked just fine for the SPA112 and Bria.

I'm thinking it's more and more likely a password issue. Currently capturing packets and trying to work out what's going on.

I got this working, and thought I should post it as a reference in case others encounter the same issues.

The format for the register string is:
fromuser@fromdomain:secret@host/extension

e.g. 07XXXXXXX@connect2.plus.snap.net.nz:secret@connect2.plus.snap.net.nz/07XXXXXXX

The peer settings that are working for me are:

[PEER]
username=07XXXXXXX
type=friend
secret=<removed>
insecure=invite,port
host=connect2.plus.snap.net.nz
dtmfmode=rfc2833
fromuser=07XXXXXXX
disallow=all
context=from-trunk
canreinvite=no
allow=ulaw&alaw

However, none of that was the actual cause of my problem. Perhaps the solution belongs in the VOIP forum instead of the 2degrees one. As it turns out, in the register string (and not elsewhere) you need to escape any semicolon in your password with a backslash.
I can't find reference to other characters - even with reading the RFC. I've tried a few different ones: % + and = don't need escaping. Presumably a colon would.
