Just moved in to new house in Wanaka and despite 2degreess coverage maps saying there is reasonable coverage, 2degrees reception is rubbish and I can only successfully make calls when the phone gives up and swaps to the Vodafone network.

Problem is, I can never get data to work when it falls back to Vodafone at this location. Other parts out of town also have no 2degrees but fall back to Vodafone with data no problems.

2degreess help desk waste of time - Yeah I restarted my phone!

Could there be some sort of geo-fencing so 2degrees subscribers cannot roam on Vodafone where 2degrees should have their own reasonable coverage?

Guess I am probably going to have to switch network, just have a load of data and minutes banked.

Cheers.

Issue on Sony Z5 (supports all NZ bands from specs) and my wife Motorola.

In areas where 2degrees have deployed their own network roaming on Vodafone is purposely disabled. I am surprised you can make voice calls though.

If you can make calls, this may be something else.

I noticed this with a family member who proudly transferred over and then every powercut was like why doesnt my phone work!

looked at her device, roaming was disabled.

Enabling local roaming, and it's happy as can be.

Roaming does not happen in all locations anymore and I am sure Wanaka Vodafone roaming will be blocked out as pointed out above

You have to be very rural to roam onto the VodafoneNZ network now. Try a manual network selection to the 2degrees network

I can select 2degrees, but little point as any calls on the network from the house have continued drop outs.

Thanks, but dont think device issue. Have data roaming enabled on National networks. Also works fine further out of town.

Well by the fact I dont have any decent 2degrees service I am not surprised it roams to vodafone. But seems strange the data doesnt at the same time. I assume that data is blocked in the area due to 2degrees having their own network here, but there is some flexibility in the voice network.

Cannot seem to find any data on 2degrees doing any network improvements in the area anytime soon.  Just ordered spark and Vodafone sims. Will do some tests on each and decide about moving provider.

Probably Vodafone 3G is slammed and there is no 4G roaming.

Get a 2degrees handset that supports Wi-Fi calling if you have home line broadband

Thought about that, but really want to have mobile data as backup if internet down, so need to sort mobile data anyway.

Linux is right that roaming to vodafone is not supported in all areas, but if you can attach to the vodafone network and make a voice call then it sounds like you are in an area that supports national roaming.

Check your APN and make sure it says 'internet'.

Thanks, APN is set to internet and works fine when I have good 2degrees coverage elsewhere in town. Also when further out of town on Vodafone. So guess just a mystery why no data when roaming on vodafone at my house.

As mentioned earlier if you are roaming on 3G it might be suffice for a phone call but dog slow for data. What’s your 3G signal when roaming?

Also, do you get an error message or does the page just sit loading?

Restart your phone to kill any data sessions. Try to load a few sites while roaming on VF even if they don’t load. Then turn the phone off for 20mins or whatever to make sure all data sessions end again.

Then check your usage on the 2degrees site for the time period where testing now and see if any data usage shows at all. It should show a small amount of data (I believe it rounds down to 0 if under 0.5MB. If you export the data usage as a CSV you should be able to see more detailed info. Is any data usage at all showing for that time period? If there is then it’s likely just a slow connection. If there’s 0 data at all it probably means the request isn’t making it to the network and it’s something with the device or settings I would assume.

As mentioned before. I dont think device or settings issue. Same problem on my wifes phone. Also when I am different locations data works fine with no changes in settings.

Pretty sure there is no data connection at all when roaming on Vodafone otherwise phone would indicate 4G 3G or even Edge if there is some data carrier.

Likewise when using Cell Info, Data is showing as off.
