Hi folks

 

So yesterday I decided to do some digging into my ISP costs after my current provider bumped by bill up by $10 a month as I was no longer in contract. This lead me to the gigabit plan and 6 months 1/2 price deal offered through broadbandcompare. Sign up process was smooth, no complaints there.

 

My question is in regards to my current provider. When should I cancel my existing connection? I put the end of month down to activate the new connection.

 

The month just started so I'm not under a time pressure, but I assume that there will be a 30 day cancellation clause (Vodafone) so I need to get onto this sooner rather than later?

 

Just a bit lost with the whole process

The problem with that is the 30 day notice clause some ISPs have.

I'm dealing with exactly the same thing, but due to that 30 day notice I've already given my notice, and will arrange for the new connection to happen by the time that period expires.

I understand there are risks with this, but I'm simply not prepared to waste close to $100, and given it's only switching rather than a new fibre install I'm willing to suck it and see. All of my ISP transfers in the past have gone like clockwork; touch wood the same happens this time, but if it doesn't I understand that's on me...

On this topic - can one elect to have the new ISP connect prior to that account cancellation date for the old ISP? Eg, my 30 days is up on 5 May - is there anything stopping me asking for the new ISP to connect me say on the 2nd?

Yes - for Chorus there's a limit of only one open order at a time on a connection. So if your old ISP already has a disconnection order in place on 5 May, your new ISP can't submit a transfer order until the disconnection order completes.

 

You'd need to ask your old ISP to withdraw the disconnection order from Chorus (but not the instruction to close your account), then ask your new ISP to submit the transfer order.

I've now requested Spark withdraw the disconnection order, which they said would take 30 minutes to process; so later today I'll request a new connection with 2 Degrees for a day or two prior to that 30 day window expiring.

 

@DarkShadow - really appreciate the heads-up on this, as I can see that wouldn't have ended well; facing two kids without internet access for a few days would have been... difficult!

The simplest and best way to move is to ring the new RSP, lodge a new connection for around 28 days or so in advance, and once you have a confirmed date and time then ring your old RSP and give them notice.

 

As the new RSP will have a open service order against the ASID the losing provider can't break anything, and you've have given your 30 days notice.

 

You may end up paying for a few days of double billing, but your won't suffer from no internet or double billing like the many people on here who try things in reverse and then complain about it.
