In the past 4 or so years I've had fibre, my ping to Valve/Steam in Sydney, playing DotA2, has been 32ms, on Spark and MyRepublic.

About 3 to 4 weeks ago it increased to 42ms. I have asked the ISP and their final answer is that my ping is "affected by your distance from the exchange". Unless the exchange has moved, it doesn't explain the change.

I have noticed over the years a ping to google.com and valve (within the DotA2 client) would match exactly.

I want to sign up to a new ISP, could everyone please detail their results to google.com in this format:

Postcode, ms, ISP, Package, Infrastructure

6011, 42ms, MyRebublic, Pure GIG, Fibre

If you want to be very helpful, please run a traceroute:

Open Command Prompt and Start a tracert

* Press the ' Windows Key ' on your Keyboard or click the ' Start ' Button
* Type ' CMD ' and press ' Enter '
* In the ' Command Prompt ' window type your desired destination;
tracert google.com

Copy the Results
* Right Click ' with your mouse anywhere in the ' Command Prompt ' window
* Select ' Mark ' and ' Highlight ' all the text from top left to bottom right
* Right Click ' with your mouse and select ' Paste ' to display your results

I noticed the lag at first during a game when I missed timings a few times in a row. I do about 140 to 160 actions per minute in game. (54% to 61% win rate) It does affect chain stun and last hitting timings. I've had about ~1,100 games at this address and in game it is disruptive. In games I have a very high chance of winning, actions are 180 to 200 (69% 72% win rate). I spam a single hero so my win rate overall is 55.5% for the hero.

Yeah, but also... no (as in noooooooooooo). There's a lot that goes into the networking, and game mechanics. These are two of the most common:

Normal human reaction time (your reaction time could be faster or slower at play time. Your average doesn't count here, and it can vary second to second even)
The route your traffic chooses to take. This happens in both directions, and is often changed on the fly as routers find better, or shorter paths for your traffic to take.

6037. I get about ~35-36ms with Spark. Full gigabit, unlimited (no idea what it's called). Fibre.

For routes, have you tried to see your RTT results if you go via a tunnel?

Could try Mudfish, it's pretty darn cheap to setup and check what RTT you would get with their servers in Syd:

its about 10-12ms from Auckland to Wellington. most people in Auckland get 20-30ms to Sydney.

i highly doubt you are noticing 10ms in you game play, you probably have more than that in jitter when playing

As others have said - the ping here won't be affecting your gameplay. There sounds like something else going on.

Also "distance from the exchange" is a poor cop-out from MyRepublic given you're on UFB. Amusingly, their "Gamer plans" don't have any reference to the best ping anymore (https://myrepublic.net/nz/personal/fibre/gamer/) but instead list Steam download speed as their top feature (do they not know ISP's normally run their own local caches and offer moroe than just UFB and VDSL which mess up their results?). Do yourself a favour and join a more competent ISP. If Latency is absolutely vital then Spark (and BigPipe / Skinny), 2degrees, Voyager and Orcon are great options in my books (all get between 32-36ms in my testing from Wellington to Sydney).

Yeah, 10ms is nothing to be concerned about - the only way Id notice that, is if I had a ping monitor running in the game the whole time (I admit I do in Overwatch, but thats just me being lazy and not turning it off last time they had network issues).

Do any of you guys saying 10ms additional latency is irrelevant actually play twitch based shooters at a competitive level? Because it absolutely can matter.

In competitive shooters it can matter but it always depends on the games implementation of networking.

In this case Dota2(source engine) actually has a interpolation system of about 33-66ms to account for delay from the server. Its also the reason it feels so laggy versus dota1 on warcraft3 and starcraft2 engine on a local server (uses lockstep) as it buffers for a minimum of 33ms and theres no way to change this.

I agree gaining 10ms is a bit of a bummer but in the grand scheme of things unless you’re starting to hit around 50-70ms anything around the 50 or less mark is pretty normal.

The additional 10 ms is the straw that breaks the camel's back, in game it makes a noticeable jarring difference to me.

Latency is everywhere, my reactions, USB mouse polling, screen refresh rate, and this extra 10 ms is what changed.

Have you tried playing without the ping showing? I've played Dota for 11+ years and always adapted to the ping, from LAN up to 240ms. I wonder if you did a blind test between 33 and 43ms would you be able to guess correctly 9/10 times
