I'm curious if anyone else has had this issue recently too? Orcon advised me that they had made a change to my handover details to try and fix a congestion issue last month (huge download speed drops during 'peak' times). Eventually, my speed did normalise, and now my download speed is much more consistent. Strangely, my ping has been quite erratic ever since. My LFC is Enable (I'm living in CHCH).

 

For reference, my ping has generally been very stable at around 37ms-38ms to Sydney servers. Since this change, my ping will jump from anywhere between 37ms-38ms (my normal latency, completely fine) to upwards of 56ms-58ms. I understand this increase isn't ridiculous. However, I'm wondering what might have caused something like this? Perhaps its just coincidence in my handover being changed? I've read that any number of network changes can happen outside of an ISPs control. Time of day seems to have a slight impact; ping spikes are more common in the evening, but can still happen early hours / afternoon on weekdays. 

 

I have observed this latency change in World of Warcraft, Battlefield 5, Overwatch and Discord. All of which use servers hosted in Sydney (as far as I can tell). My local ping also increases too, so I don't believe this increase to necessarily be an international issue either.

 

The vast majority of trace routes I've performed were under test conditions (albeit a few were done when someone else was streaming Netflix). Although, on a gigabit connection, that shouldn't really cause these kind of increases.

Different day, but this kind of increase has been more common lately.

 

 

 

Hopefully the formatting is okay. Sorry to be that guy, I'm just wondering if this is maybe an issue completely out of my control, or a possible network issue?

 

 

 

I know these issues are mostly just a 'deal with it, you can't tell the difference anyway', but I'd very much like to know if anyone else is experiencing these issues. Either way, I'd really appreciate any input / assistance :)

Google research icmp packets (ping test)

As the network traffic gets more busy these packets of data don't get priority thru the network so it's not a true reflection of the actual latency

We have capacity on 2 cable systems over to AU. 

 

It will depend on which traffic path the traffic takes at the time.

i run two ISP's at home, lets name them ISP 1 and ISP 2.

 

 

 

ISP 1 just likes to toss the data wherever it goes, who gives a crap. Downloading Andriod images i'm lucky to be getting 200KB!

 

ISP 2 takes pride in tuning their network, so it nicely sawtooths up to pegging the line out.

 

 

 

ISP 2 had about 4ms higher latency to the same server... i know which i prefer ;)

 

 

 

insaying that, i can't help but have fun with it and go gosh @sounddude, fix the pixels being too slow!

 

 

 

 

Going back to OP, latencies within your network seem a tad high...

Not due to congestion. We have plenty of bandwidth.

 

The latency difference is due to one cable system being longer than the other, therefor takes longer to transfer the data packet across to Sydney.

 

Nothing to fix sorry. Can't make the speed of light going any faster.....

Just ran this, first hop to vocus server is a little higher. I still don't quite understand why out of all the people I've asked, none of them have the same increase? If someone on Orcon could run a traceroute to the same server right now, I'd be interested to see what they get. Is there any more in-depth troubleshooting that I could perform? My speeds are fine through the modem speedtest, but again, higher latency:

Honestly, what you're worried about is 10ms difference which is nothing at the end of the day

 

Stop worrying about it and just use the internet

Well, turns out my speeds are definitely tanking too. I was lead to believe that the modem speedtest on the Orcon website was accurate, but there's no way it is (I've been judging my speed from that for the past week or so). From all the speedtests that I've done, the Orcon speedtest is the only one reporting something close to what I should be getting.

 

I'm not even getting 100mbps download to the CHCH or AKLD Linetest server. Can't break 100mbps to Australia either.
