Hey GZers!

It's been a while since I've posted, and it's Apple season again. With that in mind, I'm looking at pre-ordering the iPhone 11 Pro/Max through 2degrees, but when I try to add the phone the website also wants me to select a new plan (which I don't want, and I can't select unlimited because I'm already there).

So how on earth does one order the iPhone?

Why would anyone do that?

You get an additional one year of warranty when you buy it from one of the NZ telcos - as they cover the cost of the second year warranty once the Apple one-year warranty expires.

Ordering from Apple offers absolutely no benefit in comparison in NZ.

Surely Apple have the same CGA responsibilities here?

2 year warranty on a $2,500 phone isn’t worth the paper it’s written on, unless it’s a full AppleCare screen replacement cover etc. CGA is all a kiwi needs for at least three years cover on a $2,500 phone!

Apple just treat phones as having a two year warranty in NZ and Aus as their way of honouring the CGA. After 2 years things get a little more iffy.

Depends on what's important to you. People have already addressed the warranty point, so I won't go there.

I don't know enough about how 2Degrees handle these pre-orders but have known of all kinds of unacceptable scenarios in my personal circles when people have pre-ordered from Spark or Vodafone. Whilst I acknowledge that it's not exactly the end of the world to not be able to get a phone on release date, I don't accept that if the telcos seriously had some respect for customers, they can't implement some kind of pre-order solution that transparently shows (at a minimum) whether what someone is ordering is in stock at the time of the order. Yes, perhaps the over-anguished teeth-gnashing by people who might have missed out on a phone on release date is a bit laughable, the lack of ethics on the part of the telcos and their lack of concern for CX are nonetheless noteworthy. And I'd rather not support such practices. I have personally seen numerous examples where people have waited for days or weeks without any kind of update on where their orders are at.

I value certainty and low transaction costs (i.e. my time is important to me and don't like hassles). Iphones (especially the Pros) being luxury devices and my income being more than sufficient to afford to pay for one outright, I'd rather just get it over and done with.

My 20c.

Wait... You've already given up with Android?

That was quick...

Yeah, I'm back on iOS. Android is too customizable, iOS is not customizable enough. Perhaps I'll be back one day, perhaps not 😋

In any case, there are a few apps (like Blackbox) that only exist on iOS, and with jailbreak tweaks I'm more than happy. It's just enough customization

I got a call an hour ago to advise they don't have enough stock and it will be six weeks. Pretty annoyed as I ordered several days ago, the website advised it would be shipped to arrive for Friday and at lunchtime the day before the release they call to say whoops we don't actually have enough stock.

Is someone at 2degrees not looking at these orders and perhaps doing a quick add up at the end of each day so they can update their website?

I too per-ordered an 11 Pro 256 in Midnight Green, haven't heard anything apart from the initial email after placing the order.

Was a little slow to order (Monday) so expected some wait, but sure would be nice to know how much, esp since per-ordering is supposed to give more time for 2d to sort out stock!
