I'm on 2D Pay Monthly and separately, I want to set up a backup phone with a SIM card.

If I buy a 2D SIM with a new phone number, pay the prepay monthly $10 once, then leave it with no credit, will it still be active after 1 year e.g. receive calls? Or do I need to top it up within a period of time for it to remain active?

I've tried looking through all the Ts&Cs but can't see anywhere that says the SIM card will be deactivated if not topped up.

From what I recall after 1 year when the credit expires, you have an additional 30 days to top up to keep it active. But to save you some hassle from spending, you can alternatively add the prepay number to your pay monthly shared data (which is free) and you won’t need to top it up to keep it active.

Edit:

You can refer to clause 20 regarding termination. So yea, it’s pretty much active 1 year from the last top up date, then you have 30 days to recharge.

And more clarification on shared data to keep the number active:

If the SIM associated with a Prepay Plan does not activate a data session in any four month period, or is not topped-up with Re-Charge Credit in any 12 month period, that SIM will be deactivated, and you will need to arrange for a new SIM and Linked Plan to be connected to the Parent Plan.

Ive bought some sim cards and not activated them, there seems to be no limit on how long they will stay active like that because I pulled one out that is at least 5 years old and put it in a phone a while back and it worked fine. Ages back there was a bowl outside a dick smith with them in it and "free" on it so I took about 20 of them.

Maybe depends on company? I've had several Aussie SIM cards get deactivated over the years.

@richms VodafoneNZ Prepay SIM pre-active cards do have an expiry date but nothing printed on the SIM pack
