Hi Guys,

Just wondering what are the Pros and Cons combining the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands?Does its behave like a smart connect?. What I mean by the smart connect is, is the modem given with the same SSID to combine the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands able to auto handle connections? An example: devices that are within close range of the modem will connect to the 5Ghz band. If device is far away from the modem like (2 bars of the wifi signal), it will switch to the 2.4Ghz?

P.s. Asking this question (s) because I don't have the Fritzbox yet but am planning on getting it soon from 2D.

Thanks

Generally that's how it works yes.

There is a lot of complexity to the whole discussion around simply using "dumb mode" (where devices decide on their own) or Bandsteering (where devices are basically disconnected from 2.4 to increase the chance)

Generally the best trick is to drop 2.4ghz by about 3dBm and then it sits about equal to 5G so devices are happier to jump on 5G on their own.

There are so many pros and cons, personally i've got all my AP's set for band steering and roaming... and then individual SSID's that are fixed or dont roam for where i want to "force" 5ghz.

Band Steering has gotten a heck of alot better over the years however :)

I found devices were connecting to 2.4Ghz when if forced they were able to connect to 5 GHz.

I was using an iPhone 6, so maybe newer device may be able to pick up on it better.
