This is not the typical thread on problems with iMessage activation after a port. I'm aware of the issues with the time it takes for the provider Apple uses to update the SMS routing tables.

I've just ported my wife's number from Vodafone to 2Degrees. It's prepay for now and she has credit on the account. I have verified that the phone number in iPhone's settings is correct.

In my past experience with iMessage activation after you toggle iMessage off and back on again, an SMS is sent to an international number. If a reply comes back, you're good, if not, you'll just see the message "waiting for activation" and it will be necessary to give it a while longer and try again.

However in this case, as soon as I toggle iMessage on, a pop-up screen appears saying that an error occurred with activation and to please try again later.

Checking usage, I can find no evidence that the SMS was sent, so I'm wondering if the SMS is even going out.

She can send other texts OK so the message centre info is right.

Any thoughts from @SaltyNZ or anyone else at 2Degrees would be much appreciated. Customer Care could only recommend the usual steps, all of which I'd already tried before contacting them.

Cheers.

If you were too lazy to read and understand the original message in which I was very clear about why this isn't the typical UX, there's no reason to believe you'll read it if I repeat myself.

I would however add that a similar situation was recently reported here, 2Degrees acknowledged the issue was on their side and said it was fixed and for the OP to try again.

Hi, glad to see it was sorted out. We used to try to keep up Apple's exact addresses for iMessage activation (to allow the SMS for free) but ages ago changed it to just a prefix. Maybe they've moved to a new one altogether...

Sadly it's not sorted out yet...That error is popping up so quickly that I'm almost certain there isn't time for an SMS to go out and come back, it happens within about a second, suggesting that the SMS may not be sending.

They sent out a new SIM? Hmmm, PM the number and I'll get someone to check the error codes on the SMSC.

Actually, odds are it's the same problem as the other thread about spurious fair use alerts.

Pleased to say that this is resolved.

It may be a co-incidence but my wife visited a 2Degrees store today to set up Pay Monthly. After that, the error message no longer appeared every time iMessage was turned on and it activated without any hassle.

Happy wife...happy life.
