I have had fiber with 2 degrees for around 12 months now without issue, last week my sons began complaining of being disconnected from game servers constantly on both PlayStation and Xbox.

After testing and reboots we contacted 2degrees who have set us up on a static IP as a fault finding trial. The person assisting said if this fixed the issue then after the trial period we would be charged for the static if we wanted to keep it. It has now been around 4 hours without any issues.

I dont believe I should have to pay extra for a service which should work and has worked for the last 12 months and previous to that with Spark without needing a static ip. Any thoughts?

This is likely related to 2degrees moving customers over to CG-NAT. Static IPs still cost money. Not entirely sure if 2degrees still offers dynamic publics. @NickMack should be able to confirm this

Here's 25 pages of thread on this issue if you care to read it. Seems a fair number of people have got this for free if it suddenly caused an issue.

If costs exist to provide a Static then yes, pay for it. Maybe someone has to assign it , maybe a system or three is in place to manage it. Too many people think stuff is just a button press so charge 10 cents once to cover that

Call them and complain. If they sort it out then you are good, if they don't there are lots of suppliers who will take your money.

If your service is now not fit for purpose because of the changes they have made, then tell them to fix it or you will go elsewhere as they have failed to provide the service. Dont put up with paying to make things work how they did before.

If you had joined 2degrees from somewhere else and then found your gaming was dropping out all the time, you would expect it fixed or you wouldnt keep it, right?

Yeah that is how I see it also . I have found 2 degrees very good so far so hope they sort this .

If you don't like the service, change providers. However, 2deg have been fairly generous with existing customers who have a genuine need for a static IP.

Different ISPs will have different prices and conditions - some will charge a one-off fee, others will charge a monthly fee. Yes, I think charging for a static IP address is ok.

Adding on to this, the reason why you didn't have these problems is because Spark NZ Trading Limited (Spark NZ, AS4771) has around five times the pool size that Snap does. Spark is currently announcing just over 1.1 million, whilst Snap (now 2degrees) announces only around 200k. Simply put, Spark is able to assign sticky IPs to most of their customers, while 2degrees is likely finding that harder, being that ARIN is out of /8s to assign, whilst RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, and AFRINIC are down to their last /8.

My issue is that after I signed up with 2d everything worked as it did with Spark up until a week ago , should I have to pay extra to have it working as it was ?I dont have an issue with them charging for static I just want what I originally paid for .

This is a good argument. Talk to their helpdesk folks. If nothing comes out of it, you can ask then if you can switch ISPs without penalty, now that the service no longer works for you.

As someone who has tuned CGNAT on the same hardware that 2degrees is using it sounds very much like they need to fix the disconnection issue rather than issue statics as a fix. Happy to help if someone from 2degrees wants to contact me, no charge just beer!

A good point. If you are not hosting anything then CGNAT shouldn't be a problem as there is no incoming connection.
