I'm on Bigpipe UFB and looking at switching to 2degrees.

Current setup is that I'm using my own router that I like (TP-Link Archer C4000), not whatever Bigpipe would have supplied.

Any reason not to keep doing this on 2D, rather than using their Fritzbox?

(Also, less importantly, why do people (including ISPs and some Geekzoners) keep calling a router a modem? I suppose it's technically both?)

A router and a modem are too different types of devices

A modem is a modulator / demodulator. It is used to convert analog to digital (adsl , 56k etc)

Router is used to to route trafffic between two different networks. Most Adsl routers will have a adsl modem built into it.

to be honest i would use my own device

I asked the same question a few months back when I made the same transition (BP>2D); I was convinced to end up taking it simply to minimise issues if it came to troubleshooting (so even if just pulling it out of the box at that point).

(In the end I switched over to the Fritzbox when my then current router - the ubiquitous HG659 - couldn't cope thanks to its low number of devices it can have connected.)

Are you using the WiFi of your current router, or doing something like using separate APs? It's just the Fritzbox can be set up in a mesh arrangement, using I assume another of the same device, if that's of any benefit to you.

The fritzbox is hands down the best isp-supplied router. Easily covers the whole house!

That's a good point about having it on hand for troubleshooting even if not using it day to day - avoids them saying "we can't help you because you have your own device".

I'm using my router's wifi. (Bought it because they have much better range than average, and other things like band steering.) Unlikely to bother with a mesh network.

I use a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter on 2degrees. I actually don't think I've used a supplied modem/router from 2degrees or Snap back when they were called that.
