I have my flac music files on a USB memory stick plugged into the modem/router, and with my old modem this used to work fine using a Sonos Connect and stereo combination.

I’ve just moved to 2Degrees and received the Fritzbox 9530, but I cannot configure the modem to work with my Sonos Connect.

The USB stick is treated as a NAS file server not music server, and the address details are entered into the Sonos Connect via their software. After entering the path and user details, I get the message:

Sonos was unable to add the music folder. Reason: There is no shared folder “\\fritz.nas\xxxxxxx\Music” on the computer “fritz.nas”.

Or, Reason: Access to the shared folder “\\fritz.nas\xxxxxxx\Music” is denied

Haven’t figured out why the different reasons crop up.

Any thoughts?

At the Fritz end I have; 1) created a user with NAS (only) access to the correct USB folder, 2) in Fritz!NAS created a share for the relevant folders, even though I do not think it is necessary for a local network, 3) Storage NAS enabled as are ftp and SMB on the same page.

At the Sonos end the new path I’m trying to created is \\fritz.nas\xxxxxxx\Music, user name and pw the same as set up in Fritz.

Win Media Player will see Fritz!Mediaserver OK, so the USB can be addressed OK.

I have love/hate relationship with Sonos!

Does the Sonos support the fritz.nas address? You might like to try using the IP address instead.

@fe31nz, I normally use the IP address, fritz.nas was just one of the many things I was trying.

The Sonos sees the modem, for if I type in a different IP address it reports the computer is not responding rather than the two messages I report above. By inference I guess that means the fritz.nas address works OK. If I have the correct IP address and deliberately misspell the directory name I get the access denied or no shared folder message. Interestingly I got the access denied message first thing this morning, the no shared folder message after I rebooted the modem and Sonos. On the off chance that I misspelt, I've also used copy and paste for the path, user name and pw.

If I take the Fritz.nas share link for the folder and put it into a browser, that works fine, so the USB folder can be addressed OK by other means.

The Sonos Connect can still set up network paths, as I just set one up to my main PC using the computer name rather than IP address - both work (it has a fixed IP). This used to be the music server, however this PC no longer runs 24/7 so the USB port on the modem was a nice low energy method of getting the music served.

Does the Fritz support SMB1 or have any SMB version settings?/

Both the Sonos Connect and the Fritzbox 7530 support v1 and not later. That surprised me as that version of the FB is fairly new, but they are planning to update to SMB v3 - sometime.

I can set either or both FTP or SMB on the fritzbox. I've just gone through them again.

FTP Only. Error message; The computer "192...." refused to let Sonos connect to it.

SMB only. Error message; There is no shared folder "xxxx" on the computer "fritz.nas". Same if I use the IP address.

Both FTP and SMB ticked. Error message is the SMB error message.

What happens if you point the Sonos at the share point itself, i.e., \\fritz.nas\xxxxxxx, rather than the subfolder??

Same error; There is no shared folder "USBstick" on computer "fritz.nas". (I've given the USB drive a name instead of xxxx to avoid confusion.)

What I've noticed today is that the error folder address stops at USBstick, it is not listed as USBstick\music. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've had USBstick\music before - should have taken a screen grab.

I did have the Sonos user in the FB directed to the music directory only. Changed it to all storage on FB - makes no difference.

If I get you correctly, the same error message.

On the USB Stick the path is USBStick/music, then music has a large number of folders for each album. I have added the music folder as a path under 'Access to NAS contents' in the FB, which means there is an individual folder with rights. However, FB also allows you to add a path 'All storage available on the FRITZ!Box'. In this case one would assume that a full directory path would be required. Both options have the same errors.

It seems to be an issue with the FB permissions, but for the life of me I cannot see why. There are only a limited number of options.

Solved!

Many thanks to those that read and commented. In the end I just had to hack my way through it with 3 different modems on the desk seeing what worked.

For the record if 1 other person in the world wants to do the same (not obvious):

Fritzbox

Setup user and path for access to USB files. UserName and Password. I suggest access to NAS contents only.
Storage (NAS). Under Home Network Sharing, tick both FTP & SMB. Change the Name from the default FRITZ.NAS to FRITZNAS or whatever. The dot seems to get in the way.

Sonos Connect

Add library. Path for the NAS networked share to be in the form: //IP.Address/”NAS Home Network Sharing name”. E.g. //192.xxx.xxx.1/FRITZNAS, or //FRITZ.NAS/FRITZNAS (both work.)
Username and password to be as entered as stored in the Fritzbox above.
Library should then be populated.

Voila!
