After having a Fritzbox 7390 for years we recently upgraded to a 7590 as the old one was becoming slightly unreliable over Wifi, and didn't support modern protocols.

The 7590 has much better range and speed, but we're finding that WiFi drops out occasionally - for example in the middle of a WhatsApp call the other day it cut off and I had no WiFi. This seems to happen on both 2.4 and 5G. Phones are both Moto G8 Plus, happens on both.

Anyone else finding this with the 7590? We have firmware 07.13 which is the most recent according to the update tool.

Hiya,

Check out this thread, sounds like a DFS issue - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=252788

Thanks @NickMack. I did that a couple of days ago, changed the channel to auto which bought it down, but my Moto G8 Plus is still losing the connection occasionally. The older 7390 seemed more reliable, but slower with less range.

Is it just your phone? Have you tried move it off automatic and changing to other channels outside of the Radar range?

I've just shifted it off automatic to channel 48, from 52. It's not 100% clear if 52 is subject to DFS (the word "between copied below") but I suspect 52 is DFS, so I'll keep an eye out thanks :) I really only use my phone, and my wife's phone is the same type.

From Fritzbox website

When a channel between 52 – 140 is used in the 5-GHz range, the FRITZ!Box checks at regular intervals whether the radio channel used is also used by a higher priority radar source (for instance, weather radar). If higher priority radar is detected, the FRITZ!Box switches channels automatically. In this case wireless devices may lose their connection to the FRITZ!Box.

I have my 7590 set to Chanel 112 and have never had a problem.

Hope this helps.

Wonder if thats what makes my wifi calling keep cutting out.

Try putting it down to a channel 48 or below and see if it helps @Mahon.

This is still happening. On multiple devices (phones, tablet) 5GHz WiFi drops for 10 - 20 seconds. Not sure if it automatically reconnects when phone is not being used, but once I notice a problem it usually fixes itself within 20 seconds.

We're using channel 48, which is outside the DFS check as described by the Fritzbox website below. Any other ideas before I call 2degrees?

When a channel between 52 – 140 is used in the 5-GHz range, the FRITZ!Box checks at regular intervals whether the radio channel used is also used by a higher priority radar source (for instance, weather radar). Do you have your 2.4/5Ghz SSID's split?

I found when I got my 7590 some time ago, I had issues with devices dropping when users on my split WLAN opted to connect to 2.4 or 5 by choice, rather than having the devices figure it out.
After I combined my SSID's, connection drops on my mobile and laptop stopped.
I've also had my 5Ghz on Auto for nearly 2 years and each time I have looked, it has remained on Channel 44.

Have you also upgraded to the latest firmware? 7.20. This came out a couple of months ago.

Cheers

Yes I'm on firmware 7.2, I updated a week or so ago. I have my WLAN split to different network names between 2.4 and 5GHz, some of my older devices are only 2.4 so wanted to make it easy for them.

Are you not getting dropouts now, or does it just switch to 2.4GHz quickly?

The fritz does pretty good band steering so moves clients between bands well. Would highly recommend using the 1 SSID. If your older devices are only 2.4, they won't see the 5Ghz network so no dramas?

Yeah, since moving to 1 SSID the drops stopped because devices shift (more or less) seamlessly between bands.
Give it a crack and let us know how you get on. 🙂

Cheers

I moved 2.4GHz and 5GHz to the same SSID a few days ago. If anything the problem got worse - I'm noticing my phone without a WiFi connection significantly more often than I did before.

I guess I call 2degrees. They'll probably want to reset it (not keen as it's configured for my setup), or replace it (I doubt it's a hardware issue), so it'll be a lot of hassle with no resolution. I guess I'll give it a go but maybe I end up buying another router.
