I have an old Snap era FRITZ!Box 7390 that seems to be fine on 200/10, but will this be OK on 900/400 ?

My main PCs will be connected via ethernet or UniFi, so I am not concerned with the wifi performance of the 7390, just if will be able to 'handle the jandal' or if I need to upgrade.

The 2degrees "things you need to know" page at https://secure.2degreesbroadband.co.nz/change-plan/connection  says:

  • To get the best possible performance with 2degrees Ultra-fast Fibre, we recommend:
  • Using a high-spec modem, such as a 2degrees Modem (model 7490)

There are posts on here that show the 7390 can do gigabit. Just make sure the LAN ports are set to Power Mode (gigabit) as opposed to Green Mode (100Mbit) in the fritzbox settings.

No, this router won't do Gigabit routing.

You really need the Fritz!Box 7490. If you're on 2degrees already you can either phone them and request one to be sent out ($15 postage charge from memory, router belongs to them) or buy one from your 2degrees portal for $150 outright. Otherwise, look on Trademe.

As per above, 7390 isn't the router you're looking for.....

The 7590 is out with 2degrees. It works well, WiFi is much stronger than the 7390, but the WiFi on mine cuts out fairly regularly for a 3 - 10 seconds at a time.

@timmmay This sounds like you're currently using DFS channels. Switch it to a non-DFS 5G channel.

Thanks @michaelmurfy , that made no sense at all until I googled it and found this thread and (edit) this documentation. I think what you're saying is channels over 52 are shared channels, and the Fritz basically turns them off occasionally to check nothing else needs that channel. I also read that the Fritzbox should only use the lower channels to avoid this.

I have my Fritz on auto WiFi channel, and it's put me onto channel 100 - though I suspect I set it manually and it's now reset to auto channel. Although I just hit "find the best channel" (which apparently it doesn't do automatically) and it moved me to channel 52 which should be fine.

Thanks for the tip :)

Thanks! nice to have a clear answer. Getting an new FRITZ!Box was not possible as part of the upgrade process, so I will contact them separately.
