Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone has any info about Orcon's much talked about (in the past at least) VDSL service.
There was a lot of hoo-ha with Orcon being Siemens' flag customer in testing VDSL.
Seems like Telstra have stolen the show with the launch of their VDSL2 service.

I am thinking myself of switching from Orcon to that service, despite the price tag.

Both Orcon and Vodafone have VDSL trials taking place in Ponsonby/Parnell if I recall correctly.

Available now where TCL has a copper network... and you will be able to run the Next IP Voice services over it as well...

Yep, we are well underway with our trials. Can't give any specifics around when you might see a product launch just yet, but stay tuned.

Speaking of which, would be really interested to hear from anyone who is interested in VDSL2 exactly why you are interested i.e. what do you intend to do with the extra speed? Are you interested just because faster = better, or are you looking at it as a potential alternative to Fibre because of the higher upload speed?

In my personal opinon...

VDSL is going to be a great marketing tool for ISP's "Upto 30Mbit/s !!!11!!oneone!" is a great advertising pitch.

If ISP's continue to provision their international bandwidth capacity at something like 32Kilobit/s per customer it's just going to be more of the same old story we have with ADSL2+ currently.

I've had discussions with Telstra about the VDSL service before it went live.
My company was considering a private fibre link and it came up in the "what are your future plans" discussion.

Telstra will be offering VDSL on a principle that they CAN delivery the goods.
This is reflected in the cost of the service.
From the people behind this at Telstra I know they will only offer you the selected speed if you can actually get it.
The equipment it being installed in cabinets, rather than just exchanges.

So I think we should be expecting something much better than current ADSL provisioning from the likes of Telecom or Orcon.

We were looking at a viable and cost-sensible link between a couple of sites.
And it looks like fibre is readily available in central Auckland, but ridiculously slow speeds cost an arm and half a leg.
VDSL then becomes a really viable alternative, at least in a scenario where at least a portion of your bandwidth is guaranteed.

I also think there is space for residential VDSL.
For now even your ADSL2+ doesn't offer a service that's reliable enough to make do with only an internet connection.
I wish I could decide to completely get rid of my landline and live of a VIOP/Skype for phone served over my internet connection (whether residential or business).
At the moment the delivery of service and bandwidth provisioning is not good enough.
Also, if you're going to offer VDSL speeds you NEED to see broadband extending beyond the link to the exchange or your internal network.
My current 10Mbps download link has never actually translated into an international download of anything more than 800Kbps (sustained, from something else than speedtest).
And there is always the issue of upload speeds.
There will always be customers which only want 1GB a month to browse trademe a few times a week.
And there are some of us who want better service, un-shaped connections, even if it costs more.
For now there is no option with Orcon (from what I understand even business broadband is shaped).
So if you're doing something with VDSL, please be kind and thoughtful about provisioning.

I wasn't really expecting a reply.

I posted my views on what I expect VDSL to deliver, but they already know that.
I learned that "trials" really means that the service is there and could be deployed, but they don't want to do it yet.
Usually they don't know how much to charge for the service to make it attractive and not hurting existing product line-up, and how to structure the product offdering.

Plus offering even faster DSL technology WILL have a noticeable impact on their international bandwidth usage.
And we know what that means (speedtest to LA anyone??).

So I think we will just have to wait until Vodafone or Telecom start doing something in this space.

Personally I think that the current DSL speeds are fast enough for the current enviroment. The problem is international speeds, no point having 30megabit if you can only download at 100k from over seas.

Id much rather isps focused on getting the international speeds up, I would LOVE 30megabit but that wont make web browsing of nz sites any better.

If there were IPTV services 30megabit would definitly be good.

So yeah for me 30megabit would be great but Id rather be able to download from over seas at decent speeds than have super fast trademe.

Well, here we are 18 months later and still nothing.
Wonder what happened with this massive contract Orcon signed with Siemens to bring VDSL to NZ.
Looks like yet another vacuous marketing blurb that never saw the light of day.

Woah blast from the past.

I would say Telecom's current cabinetisation program and the prospect of FFTH within 10 years have made investment in VDSL not very attractive to ISP's like Orcon.

We have VDSL working and functioning in our DSLAMS. However since we are not in the cabinets only the exchanges the customer base that can use VDSL is quite small.

dauckland: You in Auckland on LLU? What exchange? If your line is good enough we could look at putting a VDSL card.
