A few weeks back parents-in-law reported their Internet service disappeared. A quick visit to their place and sure enough there was WiFi (through their Fritz!Box 7490 with firmware 7.12) but no Internet service. Plugged the router directly to the ONT (it was via a patch panel before) and still nothing. A factory reset restored the service.

Last week they reported the same thing again but they were just going away for a week. So now they are back and I visited them to check on their Internet.

Same thing again but this time a factory reset did not get their provisioning username back - instead it was "2degrees-factory"... I waited for some change but nothing happened. So I tried with a D-Link COVR router (after changing the broadband password online since I didn't know it) and it worked fine - but the Fritz performs better so now that I knew the password I did another factory reset and entered the credentials. This time it worked... But not for long.

Wife called and she was about to collect me when the Internet stopped again - just an hour after I did a factory reset. So I just put the D-Link COVR router (and satellite points) since I knew that setup was working. This has now been up and running for a few hours, with no problems.

Has anyone had previous experience with a Fritz!Box behaving like this?

Hmm - Interesting. Never seen this in many years of running a FB. What does the sys log on the FB say?

It should show the disconnects but also check the profile (which it should be by default) is not set to manual connect but rather auto since even if it does drop the link - it will auto-reconnect.

Key to have a look at the sys log. Alternative is to flash it with the latest firmware via manual update.

Nope, haven't seen anything like that. Sounds like it's buggered. Is it purchased or leased?

No idea - they don't pay anything for it on a monthly bill, so I guess it was originally purchased.

I signed up for a new contract recently, got a 7590 free on lease when I committed to 12 months.

I had a similar exp with my pretty old in the tooth 7490 (have had my 7490 for a good 8yrs now I think) with our Orcon connection where overnight the internet would drop - I thought this was due to a error between using the Orcon router and then the 7490 connected to it (when using the 7490 directly with the ONT everything is ok but was fault finding so had the ISP router in place).

I have been using the 'lab' releases since then and have had 0 issues. If you want to try it, grab the firmware here https://en.avm.de/fritz-lab/ It feels more like early preview than beta.

freitasm: ... Has anyone had previous experience with a Fritz!Box behaving like this?

I didn't have to reset mine to factory defaults. Internet traffic stops & come back after 5-7min. Previously thought it was my SamKnows box, but that's been disconnected for a week now & had my internet freeze twice tonight. 🤷

My Fritz!Box is maayyyybeeee 5 yrs old, certainly not 8.

I've got ±400 lines / 1 week of Fritz!Box event logs if you are keen? Box reports as online since 2020/08/12 when I removed the SamKnows box. I can't spot anything obvious showing a disconnect.

So the box is not dropping your connection but you are loosing connectivity? I would reflash and factory restore. Also setup monitoring. e.g. My FB emails if it reconnects so I know. Also check the DNS addresses you are getting. You can try and manually setup them and see if that is more stable.

Think 8 years is an overestimation since google tells me it was released in 2014 🤔 whoops.

My memory must be going, but I went from 73xx > 7490 with snap due to a fault and it's been the main router since.

Replaced the 7490 with a new 7590 and all good - I suspect heat may have caused this as the 7490 was inside a distribution box in the garage. I've installed the 7590 in their home office (which has three ethernet endpoints that go back to the box so easy to do).

The 7590 came with Fritz!OS 7.13 installed, but 7.20 was offered and I've updated that. The 7590 is really a bit faster than the 7490.

Great stuff, 7590 is an awesome piece of hardware, much faster CPU!
