I have a couple of servers in Digital Ocean's San Francisco data center - this morning they seem to be blocked for me but other locations around the world could access them just fine.

I tried some tracerts, and narrowed it down to SF area. I tried several different hosts, all seem to break at any2ix peering.

(Forgive me if I have the terminology wrong!)

I am on 2 Degrees with a static IP.

e.g.

Digital Ocean SFO1: (or SFO2, SFO3)

Tracing route to speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com [107.170.223.15]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  fritz.box [192.168.0.253]
  2     5 ms     3 ms     3 ms  41.7.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.7.41]

TestMy.Net San Francisco:

over a maximum of 30 hops:

I called 2 Degrees support, the support rep there could access my sites OK, which I find super weird. It's like my IP is being blocked, at a peering level! So strange.
Anyone else with the same issues to speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com or sf.testmy.net ?

Mike

If you post the server IP people on different service could try a ping for you.

They can try the hosts I posted above. I have already tried my own hosts via VPN etc and it works OK.

OK thanks very much, seems like it's not just my IP, but something with the peering agreements.

I don't think this has anything to do with peering. Both of you are posting from the same IPv4 subnet so it could be as simple as them having this blocked for some reason.

From my connection:

traceroute speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com
traceroute to speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com (107.170.223.15), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  router (192.168.2.1)  0.273 ms  0.241 ms  0.180 ms
 2  86.7.69.111.static.snap.net.nz (111.69.7.86)  1.907 ms  1.906 ms  1.862 ms
 3  * * *
 4  two-degrees-new-zealand.as23655.any2ix.coresite.com (206.72.211.83)  137.072 ms  137.004 ms  137.011 ms
 5  206.72.211.191.any2ix.coresite.com (206.72.211.191)  147.796 ms  147.846 ms  147.802 ms

 8  107.170.223.15 (107.170.223.15)  149.191 ms  149.105 ms  149.036 ms

I note this is also available over IPv6:

traceroute6 speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com
traceroute to speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com (2604:a880:1:20::9:9001), 30 hops max, 80 byte packets
 1  2406:e001:1:df01::1 (2406:e001:1:df01::1)  0.484 ms  0.428 ms  0.416 ms
 2  2406:e000:2801:1:: (2406:e000:2801:1::)  1.044 ms  1.397 ms  1.007 ms
 3  * * *
 4  2001:504:13::211:83 (2001:504:13::211:83)  136.765 ms  137.005 ms  136.910 ms

Perhaps enable IPv6?

Good point - I had assumed there would be a few more hops after the last I saw, but based on your trace it looks pretty close to the final servers.

Also I assumed the two servers were in different data centres, but actually the testmy.net server is a digital ocean server too. oops. So maybe Digital Ocean is blocking our 2degrees subnet.

I enabled IPv6, but get similar results:

Tracing route to speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com [2604:a880:1:20::9:9001]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
