with all the threads on here with slingshot bashing...i just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU!!!!
after being with slingshot for 4+yrs now i was relatively happy with the product up until a couple of months ago when the whole "crap speed" issue arose. now, they have "fixes" in place which should take effect on 17th november and have also purchased more international bandwidth (so there is a god!)...and for the icing on the cake...the new "Big Thing" plans are amazing...$99.95 per month and you get 40gb + off-peak downloads + data banking with ADSL2+ speeds! with phone line!!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! you guys have completely restored my faith in slingshot...and will continue to be a loyal customer!!! glad to finally have a resolution to this "trying" time....but the new plans get me more excited that watching two girls go at it!!!

again, thanks Slingshot!

That would make for a very interesting advertising campaign.  You are also very geeky.

Glad to see some positive news in a forum often filled with complaints...

Then you were doing something wrong.  Mightn't have been your fault, perhaps a poor choice of girls?

The idea is they need to have as much fun with each other as they do with you. That way no one gets bored. Lots of drinks helps, as do the right girls Laughing.

But yes, Slingshot has done well.

The plans sound good, but when they're shaping everything to below 80kBps (often below 60kBps), you can see why they claim so much.

Indeed, have they fixed that rate shaping after 10mb problem or is it a "feature" of the plans?

Perhaps they are trying to set a record for NZ isp with the highest contention ratio and worst over subscription?

It is better, although certainly not fixed. Although I haven't really tested, it now seems like you only need to transfer a couple of MB before it starts you on your way to a cap of 60kBps. (Twice the old amount, but still pathetic.)

Interesting....

I've been trawling through Geekzone and Slingshot forums to ascertain whether Slingshot have better international speeds at busy times than Xnet, who give me  unacceptably slow throughput (Line sync speed is great).

What I would like some clarification on is:
  • What sites are throttled like this? (I'm aware it includes rapidshare and torrent traffic).
  • Are ordinary web pages such as Youtube affected?
  • is the 60kBps speed cap a restriction on the entire connection, or a per site/source one?
  • Notwithstanding the download throttle, are Slingshot speeds ok from main international websites during peak times (fast enough to watch streaming video without repeated buffering)?
I'm particularly interested in the new "Big thing" service over the Red network.

I'd appreciate input from any Slingshot customers in the know.

Cheers

I can answer from personal experience:

1) Most, if not all international sites (Servers at Said, Jumpline, Dreamhost, EA, Google, Godaddy, Spry, Darkstar are all affected). Some national sites appear to be affected, too.
2) Youtube as in the videos or as in the main site? Videos are definitely affected to a degree (I don't get >1Mbps stream speeds)
3) Neither. 60kBps seems to be the cap on torrent rates. 30kBps seems to be the cap on SSH transfers. 1Mbps seems to be the cap on the entire connection. (~80kBps per server, except torrent traffic which appears to be ~60kBps over all torrents).
4) Not really. Everything that takes long enough to transfer is affected. Which does appear to include streaming (music or video). If you're able to watch would depend on the quality of the stream. Pages load quickly for a few seconds, but any images left will 'hit a wall' in regards to download rate.
