Hi all

I have really been struggling with getting even a basic level of reliable service from 2Degrees because of reception (of whom I am a big fan otherwise) and I'm at a loss about what to do.

My problems are these:

I get very poor reception in my house (in Waterview / Avondale - hardly rural).

I get about 2 bars and cannot receive or make phone calls reliably using 3G/4G - I have to use wifi calling when I am at home to be able to use my phone.

If I don't, any time I make a call it will get cut off after about 3 minutes. For a while I thought this was my iPhone - because there were so many reports of calls dropping on iPhone XR - but Apple could find nothing wrong and I even got a new iPhone (12mini) and the problem remains.

So, I have to remember to turn wifi calling on and and off every time I leave the house, which is really not cool. I am missing calls all the time when I am out.

Now, I am getting people reporting to me that they cannot get through to my phone at all - whether I am at home or out, and some have sent me evidence of all the times they called, but there are no missed calls recording on my phone. People can try to call me, my phone is sitting right next to me, and it doesn't ring.

Now, some people are reporting they are getting the 'this number is disconnected' message when they try to call me! This is a nightmare for my business. My partner is also on 2Degrees, he experiences same poor reception and a friend said they got the same 'disconnected' message when calling him the other day too. So it's not just me.

I recently tried to move to Spark because a) they promised I would have better reception, and b) I really need (not just want) a new cellular Apple watch to help me with aspects of my life, and I can't get this on 2Degrees.

The reception in Spark was just as bad, and to my horror I realised I couldn't have wifi calling at all with Spark, so I had to change back! Has all been a massive drama and now things seem to just be getting worse and worse.

I can't believe I can't get reliable phone service in Auckland Central!

I have tried to talk to 2Degrees about it but they want me to 'prove' my issues, which is pretty hard if I don't know who is trying to call me and can't. I also have been on hold for more than 30 mins in the last few days and can't even get through for help.

I don't know if it's related, but I have also been getting the most incredible amount of phone spam, all from NZ mobile numbers, so bad I have had to silence my phone to unknown numbers, I can't understand how all these calls are getting through (there is never anything but silence on the other end) but my friends and business contacts can't call me :-(

What are my options people? I have looked into expensive signal boosting equipment - will have to choose which network it is optimised, for, this matters because of the wifi calling vs. Apple watch dilemma.

@jaznz Why do you have to turn Wi-Fi calling off and on each time you leave the house? I know handover to 3G does not work but handover to VoLTE works great where I live (VoLTE is live)

Is your house made of brick or in a dip?

This is not a 2degrees issue and you really can't expect 2d to help as coverage is best effort and covered under the T&Cs

If you get a signal booster it has to come from 2degrees or you can risk big fines!

I have installed a lot of Cel-Fi repeater systems. These work very well and are network approved. Not cheap though.

I've noticed an increase in people not being able to get through to me very recently. Same thing - it doesn't go to voicemail which is what you'd expect if you don't have coverage - instead they now get an error message (number is disconnected) - these are people that have always been able to get through fine previously for years. Seems only to happen to people calling me from Spark & Vodafone - and I'm always in good coverage areas so doubt it's a coverage thing.

It hasn't bothered me enough to report it but sounds somewhat similar.

Welcome to my world!

Terrible cell phone coverage here at a our rural property so only option is 2degrees and wifi calling.
It is not great about 50% of the time as callers can't get through to me and I often can't call out.
Have to turn wifi off and on again on my iPhone to get the wifi calling working again.
I've given up troubleshooting this and the issue happens at other locations so I know it's not my network or internet here.
I've also tried my SIM in another phone and it still happens so it's not my iPhone Xr.
It happens with my wife's phone as well.
Just waiting for another provider to get wifi calling so I can see if their offering will be any better.

I've got a couple of shortcuts set on my iPhone, one that runs automatically when I plug it into the Car, it detects CarPlay and turns airplane mode off so the phone will connect to normal cell signal when it can.
I've got another shortcut that I have to run manually but it prompts me when the iPhone gets near our address and airplane mode is switched on again forcing the phone to use wifi calling.

I found if I don't do that with airplane mode then the phone will try to connect to the cell signal whenever it picks up even the tiniest amount of it around the house.
If you're on a call then it drops when that happens.

And yea no need to keeping turning wifi calling itself off and on, I just leave that alone.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

This doesn't address your concern, but if you have an iPhone could you create shortcuts that activate based on Arriving at or Leaving your home?  I personally haven't set any shortcuts up, but I have heard you can do all manner of things with them.  Someone here might know if its doable based on location.

Thanks all. What I meant to say about turning wifi calling on and off .. is actually that I have to put my phone in airplane mode when I am home to make sure the wifi calling takes over, as otherwise it does not kick in when I've got 2 bars, phone tries to use cellular coverage and the calls fail.

Yes, perhaps a shortcut or script will help with that.

I do believe there is a problem that 2degrees should be responsible for in that if people cannot get through to my phone due to poor signal, then they should not being getting told that my number has been disconnected! They will never bother to ring again. This makes no sense.
(I don't have any diverts set up.)

Yep, we are in the same world. I live 4k from CBD so not like I am expecting miracles. My house is not concrete, I am in a small dip with large trees around.
I also have to turn airplane mode on and off to get my phone to switch from wifi to cell network (found this to be quicker than turning wifi on and off and does the same job). Will look into some shortcuts.

Let me know if you hear of anyone else offering wifi calling soon!

I too have the same issues despite being within a city. Im told i am just in a black spot. Not sure how these telcos live up to their advertised coverage rates. From memory I believe 2 Degrees advertise 97% mobile coverage.

97% of the population not 97% of the land mass. Ask 100 people if they have coverage at their house and I reckon you'd find at least 97 say yes.

I think I read somewhere the actual landmass coverage is around 50%.

In past I remember rental property ads in London included shorthand indicators of which cell providers had coverage at that property.
