I've got a 2degrees ultimate fibre plan that I have traditionally used with my Unifi USG router, I've recently moved back from a 3 month period out of the house and during that time the connection was moved with us but I used my old fritzbox 7390 instead as I couldn't move my entire network with me.  Previously I had the USG running IPS/DPI and accepted the lower performance as I was hosting some external web stuff and wanted the security etc. for the open ports.  These where migrated to a cloud provider prior to the temp move so turned these off to get full speed as the USG does support 1Gbe internet connections.

Now we're back in, the USG was only giving me ~100/128 which suggested that DPI/IPS was still turned on despite the settings so I thought I would try with the Fritzbox again, but that is capping out at ~300/400, well below the 900 or so that the plan should provide.

Now I know that speedtest.net etc. isn't that reliable and it varied substantially amongst the different providers but Steam was only pulling at ~280mbps and that can run fast normally and an MS server 2019 ISO from the MS Website was ~ 260mbps too.  Before I log something with 2degrees I wanted to see if there was a reliable way to check the connections maximum speed.

For interest network topology currently is:

ONT > Fritzbox 7390 > Unifi Flex Mini > Unifi Switch 24 (Gen 1) > Unifi Switch 24 POE (Gen 2) > Unifi NanoHD

Previously it was:

ONT > Unifi USG > Unifi Flex Mini > Unifi Switch 24 (Gen 1) > Unifi Switch 24 POE (Gen 2) > Unifi NanoHD

Switching from the USG to the fritzbox has increased the download speed by ~200mbps but I cannot seem to reach the full 950mpbs that hte plan is supposed to achieve.  The entire house is wired (as you can imagine from the amount of switches!) so there is no wireless network in play when it comes to testing.

Any comments/thoughts?

Thanks,

Chris

Keep it simple....

ONT > Fritzbox 7390 > direct to high performance computer on wired LAN.

Use speedtest.net application.

Test against several big name speed test servers: 2D, Spark, Vocus.

Report back to us with your results.

Ah yes sorry, forgot to say that I already did that with 3 devices; HP Gen 4 intel laptop, HP AMD Ryzen 4500u laptop and my own HP Elite X2 1013 G4 tablet.  The servers gave various speeds, some lower than the figures stated but none higher... apart from the chorus fibre lab which produced ~500mbps down but a really low upload.

Also tested to non-auckland servers which gave similar and highly variable results.

Feel like a 7390 might struggle a bit.

Do you have something else to test with? You could try see if 2degrees would be able to come to some sort of agreement and give/rent you a 7490 or 7590. Alternatively could potentially pick up a 7490 for cheap on TradeMe, or even a HG659 if you're just interested in testing!

Hmm... I thought the 7390 could get at least 700 from all the stuff I read; I don't have anything special turned on and wifi is disabled so its supposed to just be purely routing... Will look at the latest router from 2degrees but I'm loathed to spend another ~$180 when the next upgrade was going to be a UDM Pro (SE?).

The 7390 was reviewed by PCWorld in 2011. So that hardware is pretty old.

If you just want to show your fibre performance get an HG659 off Trademe for $10.

So I factory reset the USG and adopted back in to the network for one more try.  USG>HP ryzen laptop gave ~916mbps down and 432 mbps up so pretty much as expected.  Interestingly my work hp tablet can only do ~300mbps max via a wired connection directly to the USG or via my switched network... Not going to trouble shoot that as its not important given my gaming PC pulled higher speeds than the ryzen laptop.  Happy that its fixed now :-) Thanks everyone!

Internal USB 2.0 ethernet card?

The ultimate fiber plan is to eat a lot of broccoli, beans and avocado. Best way to test performance is time on the can ;)

No, the device has 3 TB4 USBC ports. I'm using a USB-C > USB-A adapter when testing an external 1Gbe USB ethernet adapter but it also gives pretty much the same reading when connected via an HP Dock G5.  The hardware (dongle and dock) on the HP ryzen produces the same speeds as when connected directly to the USG.  The device has some limits, either through work settings or otherwise but its not really relevent now :-)

I've got the highest throughput known to man there then!
