Have recently signed up to slinghsot and considering an upgrade to the suplied router-  would any decent router be compatible or are there requirements that not all have? Been looking mostly at Netgear/Asus mesh set ups, which i would be connecting directly to the ONT, and want to know that whatever I buy i will be good to go.

Looks like just VLAN tagging and DHCP:

No, these are a full waste of money for what you get.

What are you wanting to achieve? Because you can get mesh extenders for your current router from Slingshot or for less than $200 each from PB that’ll perform just as well in most cases and not cost you a kidney in the process.

What are you wanting to achieve?

Better coverage, compatibility with my wifi6 devices, improved speeds.

Currently have D-Link Covr-2202 connected via the slingshot router, but the wifi speeds I am getting are the same with the gigantic plan than they were with a 200/100 skinny connection. The distance from ONT to main living area is only about 10m in a mostly open plan environment so I can only assume its the gear im using thats not up to scratch

Have tried running the D-Link in router mode conencted to the ONT but wasnt able to configure it to work

Hi, on 2.4GHz or using 5GHz with 40MHz channelling (which is recommended) then getting around 200down on wireless is not far from expected. Do you have devices that can acutally use more traffic rate than that, Most web browsers will struggle to render faster than that regardless of the hardware your running. If you are talking about hand held ARM based devices (ie Android or Ios) then again, what are you doing on those devices that can process much more than that.

If you have high performance desktops/laptops doing graffic work and regularly shipping images about, then put them on a cable and they will make the most of the GigE WAN.

Pretty sure the Covr will connect to Slingshot on its own. I will check the notes.

Cyril

Edit, if you follow this link you will see how to setup the Covr2202, have to scroll right down, key thing is under Internet > Vlan > Triple play, enable it and for Internet set it to vlan10, and in the main settings I think Slingshot is DHCP but the PBTech notes show PPPoE, so you might need to check the supplied router to mimic that.

I'm not sure what you're expecting, but you do realise you won't get close to 1 Gbps over WiFi?

WiFi performance is dictated by lots of things including channel width, the number of chains on the AP, and number of chains on the client. If you need more than ~300Mbps over WiFi then you should be using Ethernet to dedicated AP's or Ethernet to devices. Mesh is not the solution to your problem, and a single upgraded router is also not the solution.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of identical threads on here, if you skim through some of those you'll probably pick up a lot.

Yes quite aware of that, mainly want the additonal speed for concurrent streaming/gaming/downloading on several devices as the speed often drops significantly when theres a lot going on. Using ethernet isnt an option as there isnt a decent pathway for it that wont get underfoot.

The post wasnt really about speed, it was about router compatbility with slinghsot

So rather spending money on more gear that probably wont perform that much better, invest it in getting a cabler into run a couple of ethernet runs.

Did you see my notes on connecting the Covr directly to the ONT.

Regardless if you use Mesh / Wireless you're always going to have this limitation. You really need to use Ethernet for high bandwidth devices else face the limitations of Wireless.

Getting a "gaming router" or "mesh router" won't fix this for you. Read this for an explanation: https://www.duckware.com/tech/wifi-in-the-us.html

Please let us know how you get on, and as you can see from the advise from myself and others, spend the money on some cables, what might seem an unsurmountable obstical to get a cable from a to b for you is BAU for a cabler.

Thanks for the replies. Guess i will finish my current offer period with Slingshot and go back to my previous package so I'm not paying for something i cant use to its capacity!

Slingshots supplied router will use IPoE (DHCP client) vlanid = 10. However they used to insist with third party routers that you use PPPoE vlanid=10, I think you need exact account credentials rather than generic as used with Spark.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

The real question is why would a cellphone ever need to run a Gb link to capacity. And if you aren't talking about mobile devices then run a wire - works perfectly every time.

I currently use IPoE/DHCP with a third party router on Slingshot with no issues. Currently using a Microtik and was previously using a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter. PPPoE worked fine on the EdgeRouter as well although I later switched to DHCP so I could get IPv6.

No exact account credentials needed if you end up using PPPoE. I've used it in the past with just test/test or similar as the username/password.
