Will anyone want to get on their network when it goes live? By then both voda and telecom will have good nationwide 3g coverage, and nz comms will be messing around with obsolete gsm technology. I think they should do a telecom and forget gsm and just do a good 3g network. I am seeing their coverage more and more when out with my old gsm handset and the awesomeness of getting sos calls only instead of no service so they are doing something right, but to me it will be a bit like having a new horse-cart factory open 6 months after the first ford is made...

You forget what 90% of the population do with their phones - voice and text.

Although voice on 3G is a lot cheaper for the carrier than 2G.

Why does everybody think GSM when they talk about NZ Comms? Who says they will only have a GSM presence when they launch? All their panels and BTS's are all dual mode, the only unanswered question is whether their 3G presence will be 850, 900 or 2100. All 3 options are available to them.

Have a look at their equipment cabinets they contact switching equipment for 2G and 3G. The information clearly available on their website says they will be launching a 2G and 3G network.

Why waste spectrum on 2g services? By the time they launch, there will be good $200 3g mobiles or cheaper. If they have all 3 bands available to them then that means that they are the only company that will have every 3g handset work on them, so why put effort into 2g? If vodafones current gsm performance is indicitive of having them coexist then is an even better case for not doing it.
