You forget what 90% of the population do with their phones - voice and text.
Although voice on 3G is a lot cheaper for the carrier than 2G.
richms: Will anyone want to get on their network when it goes live? By then both voda and telecom will have good nationwide 3g coverage, and nz comms will be messing around with obsolete gsm technology. I think they should do a telecom and forget gsm and just do a good 3g network. I am seeing their coverage more and more when out with my old gsm handset and the awesomeness of getting sos calls only instead of no service so they are doing something right, but to me it will be a bit like having a new horse-cart factory open 6 months after the first ford is made...

sbiddle: the only unanswered question is whether their 3G presence will be 850, 900 or 2100.

Have a look at their equipment cabinets they contact switching equipment for 2G and 3G. The information clearly available on their website says they will be launching a 2G and 3G network.
