So, Signed up to 2degrees mobile broadband, great speeds and what not but the downside is,

we were give a B535-232 Huawei router.

This thing is simply put, just a total pile of crap. Doesn't support bridge mode I find out first, and now I cannot for the life of me get a simple port forward working.

Why would any ISP sell this crap to their clients? Im actually so confused right now.

Because 99.9x% of their customers would never use either of those features.

First off - Language...

Second - you're not even provided a public IP so those features are pointless. You could add what you're trying to achieve?

Also noteworthy this isn't your first thread with mobile broadband issues (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=289608) so is this the right product for you? Is there a local WISP covering your area? You really need to provide more information instead of starting these posts basically saying a product or service is rubbish without backing up your claims.

Lastly, that router is not rubbish. It does its job well which is to provide you basic internet.

But how can I not forward a basic port. Im trying to forward PPTP 1723, but no go. And yes, ive tested the service its actively listening on that port!

I've even tried throwing it in a DMZ, no go. Its like none of the functions work.

So do they block the traffic at the ISP end?

No you just don't get a public IP address (CG-NAT). You can't port forward.

Many connections these days come with CG-NAT as a standard which is totally fine for basic internet. So it sounds like you're trying to enable a VPN? Have a look at Zerotier for that task instead: https://www.zerotier.com/

The router provides port forwarding - your plan does not. You'll be on CG-NAT and so port forwarding is not possible without a static ip and I'm not sure if 2degrees even provide static ip's on their wireless plans.

Its not the routers fault but as mentioned - most of those features are useless being behind CG-NAT.

I would also not recommend using PPTP - not secure as some of the other VPN protocols but then again you cannot get that working behind CG-NAT anyways.

I know PPTP is not secure, but right now I dont want to go down the route of IPSec especially how difficult this is turning out.

So, my ISP is natting for me. I need ports open for work? How the hell am I meant to get this done behind CGNAT.

This is a big problem for me.

Well you cannot get it working behing CG-NAT. Your options are to contact your ISP and ask if they offer a static ip on their wireless broadband plans. Not every ISP does on wireless broadband. Pay for a static ip if they do and your port forwarding will work. Even if you went fibre via 2degrees you'll be behind CG-NAT and will need to pay for a static ip.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Did you actually look into it? Zerotier runs on Mikrotik officially. There is a big banner at the top of the page 😊

Given there isn’t actually a problem with your current router I’m locking this thread. Zerotier does work behind CG-NAT so this is your best solution. There are other solutions out there too.

Please be mindful on language next round.
