Just got an email from 2d that I am being moved to a shiny new plan, which come with extra data for an extra $5/month.

Thing is, I have no need for extra data, in fact, I have enough stacked up to last me a year or two...

In the past we'd stay on old plans - is this no longer possible? Is this a forced change?

Looks like I am going pre-pay...

Yes, a friend of mine received the same letter. It cheekily suggested they don't tell anyone else about it! They're on the "grandfathered"  $30 pay monthly plan (like I used to be on), and they're being pushed onto a "new" $35 month plan with 300 minutes/Unlimited txts (as before) and 1.5GB extra data per month. Problem is they already have heaps of data and minutes rolled over, and don't need anymore. I've suggested they consider a move to one of the prepay plans at koganmobile.co.nz for between $6.58 and $13.57 month, paid 1 year in advance, available until 30/11/21 unless extended.

I moved a few months ago, and couldn't be happier, except that support is online only, and may not be as good.

Here's the cheeky letter my friend received. Grandfathering over.

All of us are relying on mobile data more than ever right now and we’re always looking for better ways to keep our customers connected. That’s why we’re making some changes to our Pay Monthly plans and from 13 December, we’ll be ending your current $30 Carryover plan.

Before you hit the panic button, we’re not leaving you high and dry. We’ve created a new plan, exclusively with you in mind. It’s not available for new customers and you won’t see it advertised online, so keep this one under your hat.

It’s been polished up and from your December bill we'll be moving you straight to our shiny new $35 Carryover Pay Monthly Plan with an extra 1.5GB of data packed in each month!

Don’t worry about any Carryover data or minutes you have stacked up, or discounts on your account, we’ll bring these along for the ride too.

We wanted to give you a wee taster of your new plan now, so your first extra bump of 1.5GB of data will kick in from your next bill date.

Then from your December bill, your new $35 Carryover Pay Monthly plan will start. (We’ve kept your current discount (Super Gold Discount) and this will be deducted off your new plan price of $35). Your new plan includes:

·         4GB Carryover data

·         Unlimited* calls to 2degrees numbers

·         300 Carryover Minutes to NZ and Aus

·         Unlimited* texts to NZ and Aus

·         Your current discount (Super Gold Discount)

·         Plus, your free data hour each day with Data Clock

Don’t forget, until 31 March 2022, we’ve doubled the data hour so you’ll get two hours free, every day, all summer long.^

You don’t need to do anything, we’ll move you to this plan automatically and it will kick in from your December bill.

Enjoy your extra data and if you think you might need even more, you can check out our other plans online.

If you have any questions, you can reply to this email, or drop us a note at newplan@2degrees.nz and one of the team will get back to you within 2 business days.

Thanks for being with us,

The team at 2degrees

I agree, this is not a bad deal. But what I was referring to is the 'forced' upgrade. I have absolutely no need for the extra data.

@kaczor47 Then move to a Carryover Prepay plan like the $19 one

I think that when you move from a pay monthly plan to prepay, you retain all of the minutes and data you've rolled over, as long as you commit to a regular prepay plan like the $19 one @Linux suggested. Best to have that confirmed first though.

Unless they've changed it, moving from pay monthly to prepay you lose all carryover balances. Moving from prepay to pay monthly you do get to retain any carryover balances.

That's a tough pill to swallow. Little incentive to stay then in my opinion,  if the extra cost for no real benefit is a problem.

I did the change a year and a half ago. Did lose carry over data. It's a whole new account(you end up with 2 accounts on your 2degrees mobile account which is extremely confusing!) hence it can't carry over.

This may be a “good deal” but if you’re already rolling over your data, you’re not using all of it to begin with so for those customers their existing plans worked for them and there was no reason to change at all. Also some of these customers may be on a fixed income being a lower tier plan and so suddenly have to budget in an extra $5 per month. This doesn’t sound like much to many on here but this is a big deal for some customers.

I don’t think forcing people is the best way of going, this is just going to drive them away to search for other deals (warehouse mobile, Kogan, skinny or prepaid). I fully think they should have kept the price the same for existing customers if they had to move them.

They’re banging on about attempting to get more postpaid customers but everything they’ve done this year is the absolute wrong way of doing this.
