I took my iPhone 12 Pro Max with existing skinny sim into 2 degrees store today, asking for an eSim with a new number/ account.

They said it should only take about 10 minutes. 90 minutes later they gave up, saying they couldn’t do it & gave up.

So no eSim, no idea how to get one (up & running)

@CeeGee Port to a standard SIM card then request the 2degrees store to move your number to eSIM

Are you moving to 2degrees pay monthly or prepaid?

@CeeGee Do you not wish to keep the same mobile number you have on Skinny? So number port not required

Yes, I want to keep my Skinny number, hence the request for an eSim and new number. I agree, no port needed nor requested.

I didn’t try asking for a new sim, I guessed they would know how to do the job. I’ll add that to the arsenal of tricks. Thanks

I switched to 2degrees recently and I think the staff in the Albany store need more training on esim. I was just given a QR code without them even doing anything with it and when I questioned if they had to pair my number with the QR code I was told nah it's all good to go just scan it and follow the instructions.. I was like sweet they've made this super easy! yeah well when I got home of course I couldn't activate it :/

Thanks for your answers so far everyone. You have made me think about a comment made during the activation attempts.

One of the staff said they have to activate the eSim before allocating a number, so moving an existing number might do the trick.

I had a similar experience at 2d Albany a week ago getting eSIM set up on my iPhone 14 Pro. The guy who served me had no idea what to do and was following instructions on his screen - which I guess may be OK given that the tech is new to them too.

He gave me the still-sealed folder that contained the QR code and basically said “see ya later”. I said “no, I want you to help me with the whole thing”. We opened the folder and he got me to scan it but it wouldn’t activate. He was lost.

He got another guy, presumably the store manager or leader, to assist. He was better and eventually they got it going.

All came out OK but I wasn’t impressed with the obvious lack of training. If I hadn’t stood my ground and got them to complete it in-store, I would have had all sorts of problems at home like you did.

I would suggest getting a prepay sim, activate it in store with them and get them to port the prepay number to on account and port that number to esim.  I have heard a number of stores doing this (as there are a few prepay sim cards getting thrown out after they go to esim).

Unfortunately I've had this experience across serveral carriers. I suspect it's not something that's a very common request (despite being something that they should support), so the staff forget how to do it properly.

Thanks everyone

Took your advice Linix & others. and asked at 2Degrees store in Chartwell to port my 2 degrees number from my still (barely) working iPhone 3G. 5 minutes later it’s up & running.

In this day & age it’s great to have people ready to share their knowledge and experience freely.

Regards

Charlie
