"The company that is challenging the Vodafone-Telecom duopoly for mobile phones has secured access to the 022 prefix for its customers.

But despite having hired hundreds of staff to establish its new network, it has still not announced its brand name and launch date.

New Zealand Communications regulatory manager Bill McCabe said that rights to the 022 prefix made it easier to draw customers from Telecom and Vodafone. On Friday McCabe insisted it was on track to build its network and take on the incumbents."

Now 022 plus 7 digits??

What I found interesting is that they now have the entire 022 range from 0220 to 0229. Odds are that the majority of users they will get will all be number ports anyway and they will only ever need to use a very small range of their own numbers.

I wonder why the NAD needs to allocate them an entire code block?

Well, having the whole block does give them options to have non-ported / similar numbers.

eg.
021-876543 can become 02 21 876543
and
029-123465 can become 02 29 123465

Of course, porting is probably better in most cases... but maybe if you wanted 2 phones, and maybe if you wanted to avoid the port process...

Great, so we will get people thinking that their number is now 0221 - xxxxxxx like there are people that get signwriting as 0274 xxx xxx...

Still, not as bad as the variable length mess that vodafone have left us with - come on, 8 digits - like you will ever have that many connections with the rate that they expire.

There is still someone at a friends work that keeps calling 025 numbers in their old address book and then complaining that people have changed numbers and the card he has is wrong....

But anyway, I thought nzcomms had 024 since there was some comment about it matching them haing NZ 24 as their carrier id on the phones...

They did - but they swapped that for 022.
