Well I waited and waited and finally it happened here in my suburb of Hamilton... ADSL2 via the new online cabinet. Ahead of schedule and with much much faster speeds. Cool! I never knew Orcon did ADSL2 outside of Auckland they certainly don't advertise this fact? WHY? it obviously happens automatically when you have a Telecom Wholesale plan? Thats great but a shame Orcon don't inform their customers of this, anyhow since this ADSL2 cabinet came online on Wednesday January 28th...I have had a huge number of hanging web pages and disconnections...a real pain when gaming. How many disconnections you ask? Well....

Wednesday 28th Jan = 2
Thursday 29th Jan = 6
Friday 30th Jan = 14
Saturday 31st Jan = 18
Sunday 1st Feb = 10
Monday 2nd Feb = 10

Now before this upgrade I'd get next to no disconnections at all and always had a good stable Orcon connection. I rang Orcon's very friendly Help Desk 3 times on the weekend and did various elimination tests to no avail. They have decided to temporarily turn on interleaving this Tuesday 3rd Feb to see if it can stabilise my connection. If this fails they will send a tech out for some fault finding. How will interleaving affect my gaming? I've never had a problem with my connection all these years with it off? I'm looking forward to a fix either way. But look at my speeds now! Why is it 300 miles from Hamilton to Auckland?

Which modem/router do you have? Are you able to try a different model?

Wow, what's it like having a 20 kb/s connection?

Hi w2k,
I have the Dynalink ADSL2 4 port RTA 1335 modem. I also have the Orcon home hub I'm about to send back as I believe it has an overheating issue and would also disconnect alot (prior to xmas). I have not tried it since my cabinet came online though. Maybe I should? The local speeds are great ! International speeds are erractic...very up and down. I'll get that problem sorted once Orcon get me a stable connection. It's certainly a nice improvement than what I've been getting in the past few months. It'll be interesting what Interleaving turned on does today?

Speedtest.net's distance shows as "in between". If you have ever done a closer speedtest you'll notice the lowest it goes to is ~50miles, which means I am between 1 and 50 miles from the test server. The next bracket is 300miles. In real tersm your probly around 100 miles from Auckland, but guess it's more than 50 miles it shows as ~300 or "in between" 50-300miles from test server

O.K... Day one:Interleaving turned on and no disconnections. For so many years I've had interleaving turned off by default with no problems. Now I'm on a cabinet with ADSL2 speeds and had problems. Why do I need it turned on to keep my connection stable? It has increased my ping alot and my download/upload speeds are not as fast as they were with interleaving off. I'm going to do some gaming now and test it in real time. Orcon's International speeds seem very erractic. I'm getting anywhere between a low 2500kbs and high 14000kbs to Chicago at speedtest.net depending on time of the day. More International bandwidth needed?

Take note of this part:

If you are already connected on an unbundled Orcon+ plan and your line is connected to a roadside cabinet then it is likely that the speed at which your modem sync's (your connection speed) will be negatively affected. This ranges from a small impact, through to (in a small percentage of cases) making your connection unusable. In the event that your connection is severely affected we are more than happy to discuss alternative options with you. This may include the option to transition back to our traditional Orcon network. The intention will be to transition you to an unbunled Orcon+ service from the cabinet once we are able to install our own equipment in the cabinets (sub loop unbundling), sometime later in 2009.

I'm on Orcon's Purple MAX/MAX Plan which is Telecom Wholesale I believe. Orcons plus plans are only available in Auckland at this time... am I right? So I'm getting ADSL2 with Interleaving now switched on to stabilise my connection from Orcon using Telecom's Wholesale equipment (cabinet).
