My 2degrees broadband was down for about 90 minutes last night. I had a ton of emails this morning from services that failed when it was down.

Other than checking the 2degrees network status page daily, is there any way to get notifications of planned outages?

There is work happening every night, except possibly Friday and Saturday nights (unless it's a major event that is expected to take several days) so you wouldn't really want the torrent of outage notifications even if they were available. If it is major planned work that will affect a big chunk of the customer base it is often notified on Twitter. I assume Facebook too but I don't go there.

Planned outages are notified to the Service Provider, it's up to them to relay this information to the end customer.

Similar thing was discussed here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=289903 - @jmosen was running off to the Commerce Commission to complain about it, but that was the last I heard about it, and he didn't provide any updates afterwards.

Interesting. I just thought notice of major planned outages could be useful.

@timmmay I see many Tweets from 2degrees about planned work / outages and they also have it on the status page

What else would you like?

Push notifications relevant to my location. I use Twitter about once a month, and I only visit the status page when something breaks.

It was just a general thought that when there's a planned interruption to a service they provide, notice would be useful. I know the contract says it's best effort or similar, and I'm not really bothered, it would just be useful at times.

I get what you mean @timmmay and agree it would be good to have a way to setup a way receive prior notification of planned outages that would effect "1 fibre street", "2 fibre avenue" , "3 fibre drive" etc without having to actively check, especially if they don't apply to you.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Hey mate,

The short answer for a consumer service is no.
The slightly longer answer basically echoes what Linux has been saying forever and a day. (Business) Customers who consume a managed service get a heads up if there is going to be any planned work. They are provided info such as which site(s) will be impacted and what the outage window is etc etc.
Floating back into Consumer land, these are typically posted on the network status page. If it's going to impact a larger chunk of customers, then I believe this is posted on Twitter/Facebook.

Long ago, when we were Snap, going through outage notifications (planned work and in progress unplanned outages) was one of my teams responsibilities and notifying medically dependent customers. Unfortunately, I don't really know what that looks like today but I remember it being aah.. Not my favourite task.

Cheers

Fair enough. An RSS feed of the outages page would probably do the job.

I wonder if rather than an outage it was a migration over to Vocus?

Perhaps check your ISP is showing AS23655 (2degrees Networks Limited) or AS9790 (VocusGroup NZ)
