Wanting to understand if 2degrees phone line now uses the ONT port. Looking at this, it appears so: https://www.2degrees.nz/help/broadband-help/modem-settings/byo-modem-help

However a lot of info on GZ says otherwise. Wonder if the switch to Orcon backend has changed this?

Based in TGA on Tuatahi network if that makes a difference.

Cheers for the help

The old 2G service was RGW Voice, new connections are now on the Vocus Core so will assume they will be ONT based

If anyone can confirm that then I'll update my list.

The target 2degrees platform chooses the voice product based on the broadband product being provided (in this priority):

  1. Fibre Available -> ONT-ATA
  2. Copper Only Available & Chorus has Baseband IP cards installed -> Baseband IP (copper) voice
  3. Copper Only Available & Chorus has no Baseband IP cards installed -> RGW Voice

Hope that helps.

Chris

This is most useful! Glad to see that RGW Voice (The worst option IMHO and requires the RSP Router) is the last resort option. ISAM-V cards not been present probably also means terrible DSL service too, which means degraded voice.

Big up to 2degrees team for this.

Also is there any plans to move current 2degrees customers off the RGW and onto ONT or BBIP or only on request?

It seems like the sort of thing that can't be done as a blanket change since it requires wiring modifications at the customer end.

@chrisvp

Have Slingshot switched to using ONT for home phoneline?

@nztim - no plans to bulk migrate.  As @Behodar has commented, it would require customer interactions and no bulk change is in the plan as it's resource intensive. There is a huge push to remove copper so most customers would go straight to ONT-ATA by default if they upgrade. @Dochart, yes, Slingshot will use ONT-ATA by default if the customer orders fibre and a homeline.

If a customer does prefer to change, it does require an escalation as there are no self-serve features capable at this time.

Hope that helps,
Chris

That’s great. Might need to update the Slingshot website with the phoneline going through the ONT.

Not suggesting migrating RGW DSL to BBIP in SFAs (And today is the last day to do that with the stop-sell on copper baseband comes into effect tomorrow)

But if someone wanted to, on request move their Voice from RGW to ONT that could be requested?

True, it could be requested.  The only customers on RGW SIP would have been on that service prior to the ONT-ATA product being built.  The platform is capable.  One would hope with fibre the CPE would ideally provide a quality voice service.  But as you know the CPE likely has a lot to do with the performance.
