Found this article concerning NZ Comms. I note their CEO says they could be launching within two months.

The expectation since before Xmas has been that they were planning to launch before Telecom. This would tend to fit with this.

Their new CEO is a very experienced operator, will be interesting to see how he goes..

Reynolds said NZ Communications had built more than 230 of the 400-500 cellsites that it intends to set up in the three main centres during the first phase of constructing its network.

Only in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch at launch? Any roaming deals or will the phones simply not work elsewhere?

Only in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch at launch? Any roaming deals or will the phones simply not work elsewhere?

A roaming deal was signed with Vodafone quite some time ago, ~2 years.

They would have to wear the cost as I doubt anyone used to paying outgoing costs only would be keen to pay for incoming calls?

They are going to have to, to be competivie in the market.

Just makes the business case stronger to roll out coverage in areas which have high roaming usage.

Its in Vodafones best interest to give good roaming rates, to make the buiness case weaker for NZ Coms to roll out more sites.

(My View anyway) :)

It appears the rumour machine has been working overtime again. This would have nothing to do with mobile to mobile termination rates would it. I note the European Union have ordered all the mobile companies to cut mobile to mobile termination rates by 70% within two years.

Going slightly to one side, this article in the herald this morning has an interesting line about Spectrum for NZ comms....

"The swap gives NZ Communications the bandwidth it needs to invest in both second generation and third generation networks"

I know some round here have wondered about a 3g offerering from NZ Comms, This might be some indication of what they will offer?

Just to make myself clear i have no inside info about nz coms about launch or anything but i bet they launch with 2G 3G have you seen the size of the cabinets at the base of the masts they are huge.

I guess the big question is what spectrum NZ Comms use for their 3G. I don't know what particular model of panel they are using (but it's the same panel on every site) but they have the ability to roll out a combined 850/900 network with their spectrum and use 3G in one of those bands.

The logical assumption would be for a 900 GSM / 2100 WCDMA network but the possibility of them deploying 850 WCDMA and 900 GSM certainly couldn't be ruled out. NZ Comms certainly have done a very good job keeping things quiet..
